You are having a laugh, "denial around in the media". Most people wouldn't know about a downturn if they hadn't read about.

Firstly, the media resisted any sort of negative story for ages. Even now, they're underplaying things; The fact that there's even some sort of argument about 'are we headed for recession' is proof of that.

Secondly, I think most people by now have noticed disposable cash getting tight and job availability dropping for themselves. The media is just telling them what they can see - it's not going into the reasons for what is happening nor the likely outcome of it all.

In short, the general media is useless in terms of delivering useful, timely economic/financial related information.

Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.

If we are indeed in a recession now it is a hell of a mild one... it's like saying a kid with one zit on his chin has acne. I'm yet to see/feel any economic effects. I'll be happy to suggest it might be to do with the industry I'm in (less effected) and/or that it just hasnt reached me yet though. Time will tell.

    Early days yet.

The fixed rate 4.75% mortgage deals have still got a few years to run yet until they go on to SVR and the interest rate doubles. That will be fine for a while as folks will just pull out their credit cards and pay the mortgage using them instead. After that, they're all be toast.

I have not noticed any fall off in my earnings and like I have posted before, the company that I work for is about to create at least another 1200 jobs in the not to distant future.

When did the SVR hit 9.50%?

You could also mention the denial from !!!!!!? about how the green shoots are already poking through.
Or to the fact that prices in my area have only had to correct by 20% and people are jumping back onto the Ladder.

a 20% correction on the houses I've been seriously looking at, and even I'd be tempted

20% in a year is serious crash speed btw
    It's a health benefit ...

Well FWIW, the financial world is in a lot of trouble I reckon. I spoke to a couple of mates that are looking for work and they haven't had a sniff of anything. One is an equities trader, the other is back office.

The latter is competing against guys from Bangalore and Hyderabad.who'll be happy to earn in a year what my mate earns in a month.

When I was looking for my current job a couple of months back, I was put forward for 2 other jobs. I might have considered them 8 years ago but I've gone some way past them in my career now. Goodness knows what someone with 2 years' experience and a redundancy cheque is going through.

I'm glad that your industry is doing well pickles, old thing. Mine isn't but I'm doing ok which is good enough for me!

I have worked for this company for 25 years and am lucky enough to have had several different jobs for them.
I know what I earn is not a sniff of what you city slickers get, but in my area I have been afforded a very good life style which I am very greatful for.
If I had to leave them I would be in trouble because all that I would have to offer another employer is my expierences and no qualifications.

I would employ you pickles, you are honest and have the traits of a little terrier. Forget qualifications, there are people on this board with loads of them and still thick as 2 short ones.
