there is no hypothecation of general taxation (of which fuel duty is a part)

all taxes go into a big central pot from which it is then wasted in various different ways.

That gives me an image of two very large piggy banks where someone in the treasury divides the fuel taxes up.:D

I feel sure what they meant was that the revenue raised in taxes from fuel, covered the cost of entire costs of NHS and education. That is how I interpreted what they said anyway.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

You may find this interesting reading:

    http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/ambrose_evans-pritchard/blog/2008/07/04/is_global_shipping_slowing_drastically

Jacques Saad!, the head of the French shipping giant CMA CMG, says the shipping cycle has turned with a vengeance.
"We're seeing ships leaving Asia that are not full. We are living through a real economic slowdown. It is a latent crisis that will take time to disappear. I don't see it getting better before the end of 2009."
"America is importing less, so is Europe. After a record year in 2007, where we had more offers than we could take on our ships, traffic between Asia and Europe has now fallen to a 94pc occpancy rate," he said.
    ..
Lloyds List said the shipping industry will know when the first Asian loads begin for the pre-Christmas season in a month as whether this is the start of a serious slump. The anecdotal talk is that the picture is deteriorating fast.

Always pays to keep an eye on the current situation rather than past glories......
!!!!!!? not like you to not be up on current facts, CMA CGM having been a falling force for several years and when the big players kept increasing they have gone further into decline.
At Felixstowe they would not get into the top 5 largest shipping lines and have not bought volume in for years.
The new players CSC, MSC and Maersk are the companys you need to look at and are already purchasing the next generation Containerships which will push the smaller players even further down the league table.
Dont worry mate! If you come and join me at Felixstowe you will have a very profitable future and you will quite easily be able to get on board the BTL ladder.
If you PM me your CV I will personally take it to our Chief Exec.

talk about trying to talk the door shut after the door has bolted...................personally I think we are already in one, with prices rising faster than I have seen in my 47 years, house prices strinking along with new posts being advertised at lower salaries, recruitment freezes, salary cuts for some and lay offs starting as companies struggle for business in the current mind set of all having to cut back on things even basics .
I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.

Maersk Line Orders 18 New Container Vessels pdf_button.png printButton.png emailButton.png Written by Editor Choice Sunday, 06 July 2008 Maersk Line is pleased to announce that A.P. Moller - Maersk has signed an agreement with Hyundai Heavy Industries for the delivery of 18 container vessels in 2011 and 2012. The vessels will each have a capacity of 4,500 TEU (twenty- foot equivalent unit).

The ships are designed to meet the highest demands for safe and economic transportation of goods in geographies such as the Eastern Mediterranean, Africa, and Latin America. In addition, each vessel is equipped with a waste heat recovery system. The system reuses excess heat from the exhaust and thus generates energy for propulsion of the vessel or on-board electricity consumption. The reduction in fuel consumption results in a corresponding reduction of emissions. It is the first time that an Asian yard will install a waste heat recovery system of this size and efficiency.

"We are very happy with this order. These vessels are part of our fleet renewal and development programme. They will enable us to continue to offer competitive container shipping based on a modern, economical, and environmentally friendly fleet," says Senior Vice President Michel Deleuran, Head of Network & Product in Maersk Line.

In view of the flexible design of the vessels, Maersk Line will work on a variety of deployment scenarios. Currently, they expect to deploy the vessels in the trades to and from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Michel Deleuran explains, "We have served the Sub-Saharan African market for more than 40 years, and we are dedicated to support the continued trade development in the region. We aim to continue to develop our services and support our customers' increasing business in the trades between Sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas, Europe, and Asia. These vessels will support us in that ambition and also show our long term commitment to Africa."

Today, Maersk Line has a 25% market share in Sub-Saharan Africa and own offices in 35 countries in the region. Customers are offered fixed weekly services in most trades, the best schedule integrity in terms of port calls, coverage and timeliness, and transit times are among the best in the market.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, the average export growth is currently 7% p.a. The average import growth is 11% p.a. Since 2002, export and import volumes have almost doubled. To support this development, the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group is not only involved in container shipping (Maersk Line, Safmarine, and Ocean Africa Container Line), but also in other container related activities such as terminals, stevedoring, logistics, warehousing and rail transportation.

"During the last 50 years, container transportation has been a key driver in globalization. Our business is about connecting the globe and we believe globalization based on fair and free trade is a winning proposition for Sub-Saharan Africa. Every day, our efforts and services contribute to improving world trade and thereby the living standards of people around the world," concludes Michel Deleuran.

I don't see what the 'top five' status of the company to whom the spokesman belongs has upon the substance of his comments about the general state of the industry but I guess you need to come up with something to justify the denial.

The amount of denial around in the media and some of the populace is simply breathtaking. After years of denying the obvious inevitability of the ending of the credit/housing bubble, many people are still trying desperately to pretend this all isn't happening - even as things are clearly and visibly falling apart.

You are having a laugh, "denial around in the media". Most people wouldn't know about a downturn if they hadn't read about.
