That was his name! And it's not spelt the same way as "Gordon Brown", the letters are a different way round :T
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

I gagged in disbelief as well.

    OK, OK. try this one.

unscramble 'drtabas' to give the name of a hugely successful prop. developer, whose marriage could be described as 'flakey'.

If we are indeed in a recession now it is a hell of a mild one... it's like saying a kid with one zit on his chin has acne. I'm yet to see/feel any economic effects. I'll be happy to suggest it might be to do with the industry I'm in (less effected) and/or that it just hasnt reached me yet though. Time will tell.

It's the thin end of the wedge at present I think, how steep and how long the wedge is nobody really knows. The tell tale signs have been there for a while now, not everybody notices them. It does also depend what industry you are in whether you see it or not. Some folk will sail through regardless.
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

If is quite correct, I believe we are, but it isn't an exact science, as for mild that may be because it has only started, property is just starting to unwind as are the layoffs in construction and the financial sector, consumer spending is still holding up. A lot of factors coming together at once may accelerate things going forwards.
Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

I am FAR from convinced that ID cards and foreign wars are "nice to have
Good point! I meant that in terms of expenditure, they are hardly necessities, and 'nice to have' is the term we use on my course - Perhaps 'lunatic ideas that even a brain-dead newt could see are a waste of money' might be better. In fact I'll use that term for nearly all of the stuff that NuLabour come out with.

how much is actually generated by stamp duty

and how much by petrol duty

the ever increasing price of oil could provided a 'get out' in this regard

(I have no idea of the actual figures, so I stand to be corrected)

I don't know what those figures are, but I did watch a programme a few months ago, where they said that the tax from fuel went on education and the NHS.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

The shipping industry must know something about the worldwide economy that the experts just do not understand.
Between them over the short term up til 2010 the are investing several billions of pounds on expanding and creating Ports.
DPW themselves are investing over one billion at the new shellhaven Port and infrastructure.
Teesport is going to become a very big player up north and liverpool are playing catch up as well.

With oil prices (and therefore air frieght) costly, and incomes squeezed, cheaper shipping might well benefit, I'd have thought.

there is no hypothecation of general taxation (of which fuel duty is a part)

all taxes go into a big central pot from which it is then wasted in various different ways.
    It's a health benefit ...
