I would have thought it would say somewhere if it was pocket sprung.

If it weighs a ton then it is probably pocket sprung. If it is then you would need to lay a sheet of peg board over the slats to stop the springs trying to poke through the gaps.

:-( for a slatted bed, what mattress should you get.

Open coil sprung is the most suitable. Or as they are sprung slats they are unlikely to be more than 3" apart, so you could use a 2 sided pocket sprung/memory foam mattress.
  • First time I've tried this so hope this is right.....!

Having read all the advice from Tim, I think I should be looking for a double sided pocket sprung / memory foam mattress to go on our king size, slatted bed. (Our previous mattress was a Silentnight Miracoil and it has lasted about 18 months, now looking extremely saggy on both sides and is incredibly uncomfortable - really bad backache too!)

Neither of us are exactly lightweight (!) - just wondered whether the memory foam / pocket sprung combination is suitable and whether the ones on e-bay (around £275 - £300) without a brand name as such are any good? Elsewhere I have seen other pocket sprung memory foam mattresses for around £400-£500

I'm on maternity leave so money is tight, but I would rather pay a bit more and get something that lasts a bit longer this time!

Any comments / advice would be much appreciated!

The pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses that you find on ebay for £275 - £300 are probably the encapsulated type, and wouldn't be two sided. The springs they use in this type tend to be smaller, and to a lower standard (hence the lower price).

You say 'Neither of us are exactly lightweight', so you would probably be better off with a mattress rated medium to firm, and as long as you turn it on a regular basis then is should last a long time.

Personal experience - me and dh bought a Silentnight Miracoil, 'you never need to turn it'. Hah! Because that's how it's designed, so all the dust mites can congregate in the one hollow. If you're, ahem, generously upholstered like myself, then you end up with a mattress with two body shaped indents and a sore back. It lasted two years! Rubbish! We then went and bought a new mattress, Airsprung, and made sure it was one we could turn. Cheaper than the miracoil and still going strong - and fresher, five years on.

Google Bedlum Beds and you will find them on there, I think the one you are looking for is called "madrid" someone posted on here that they had bought one and said it was lovely.
