Best double mattress

Toppers are a good cheaper alternative if you don't need to change your whole mattress. However, when your mattress does need changing you would be better going for one with the memory foam built in.
Also you should never try to revive a worn out mattress with a topper.0 -
I should point out that Outlast is latest version of coolmax, and although it will feel cooler when you first get into bed, it will still warm up eventually, so you could still end up waking up too hot.
Outlast is actually better suited to outdoor clothing where the wind will cool it down. It then acts like a refridgerant by taking the heat from your body.
The best type of memory foam mattress that doesn't make you too hot is the ones made from memory foam on top of a springs layer. This is because air can circulate in the spring layer to dissapate the heat from the memory foam. The other thing to make sure of is that the memory foam is between 2" and 2.5". If it is less than this it won't be deepenough to contour to your body. If it is deeper then you won't get any extra support, you will just sink deeper into it, become engulfed, and then become too hot.
The prices on the web site that you quoted still aren't that cheap even when you take 30% off, especially for a reflex/memory foam mattress (the coolmax is in the cover, not the memory foam.0 -
I need to buy a bed and as usual came here first. I have read through previous posts and I am even more confused. Tim, I have pmed you, as it looks like you really know about beds. I am thinking of buying an aerobed and changing to a proper bed when I move in a few months time. Since I do not even know which bed to buy.
Any help and advice will be most appreciated.

Both coolmax and outlast are both made by Dupont. I think the idea is that outlast will replace coolmax in beds.
If the mattress is right for you abab then that's great. However it would be difficult to say if that is because of the outlast or not without having a comparison.
The mattress seems to be to a fairly good standard as far as reflex/memory foam mattresses go. Pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses give the best support, but that doesn't mean that yours won't give good support. The memory foam is about the right depth, although the density is only 55kg per m3. This is acceptable, but 60 to 70kg is the optimum. The 25mm top layer ids a bit of a gimmick which may give it a softer touch, but won't give you any better suppory, and may also contribute to you getting too hot. The price is more than double than you should pay for a mattress of this spec.0 -
Tim, I was fortunate to be given our current water bed and the previous one was bought in 1984, so I haven't any research on prices. I have not used the previous waterbed base and just put the current bed base [Malm superKing sized from IKEA] around the base of the softsided bed. It works well.
If a water bed has plastic conditioner put into the water annually I personally know of people whose beds have lasted over 20 years .... not a bad prospect!
Hope this helps

Thanks for that.
I wouldn't trust an Ikea bed to take the weight though.0 -

Hi.
The first thing to take into consideration is that Slumberland are one of the huge companies who although their quality is better than some other companies I have previously mentioned, they still use the 'high volume/low production cost/high advertising budget' method. This method wouldn't give me the greatest confidence in their products.
This bed is only available with a platform top divan base. This would lead me to think that Slumberland don't class it as a luxury mattress, as most luxury beds come with a sprung base option.
I've been trying to find the density of the memory foam, but they seem to be using an unusual system. The optimum density is 60 to 70kg per m3, although 55 to 80kg is acceptable depending on personal preference. All I can find for this mattress is 55/80g which doesn't tell me anything, and appears to be designed to confuse.
This mattress is non turn, so won't last as long as a two sided mattress.
Do you have the link to the one you are looking at, because the sites that I have found with it on seem very expensive for the specification of the bed?0
