i thought you recommended independants, like Millbrook?

we're very happy with our Millbrook mattress that we've had for a couple of weeks now, excellent quality & support.

there's so much info on here for beds/mattresses, in the end i just found it easier to shortlist a few brands & search on them for any feedback already posted.

    good luck!

Millbrook isn't a small independent company. They are a big company, and are part of the Millbrook Industries group http://www.millbrookindustries.co.uk/index.html

Hmmm I am bemused by your comments and I shall be wary. Obviously I won't ask you to expand further on what you have said, but thanks anyway.

Aargh! I really want to order so I need to overcome this rather frustrating attack of indecision!

Thank you for your wisdom and time Tim. :T

I notice that you have discounted various models because they don't contain latex. As I said previously, many manufacturers only use a very small amount of latex, which isn't really worth having. So you would be far better off with a good quality pocket sprung/memory foam mattress with a climate control fabric like Climasmart or Outlast.

yep this is the problem of information overload! I'm doing a similar thing and keep seeing millbrook crop up time and again.

Tim's advice is very useful though TBH to actually find a bed that meets all his criteria is like looking for a needle in a haystack if you actually want to try in a shop before you buy! Of course you could buy direct from Tim but to be fair a decent bed is quite a big purchase and one i feel you really need to have tried before you buy. Even so Kozeesleep which is one of the brands he sells is on my list (i think i can say this as i don't have a conflict of interests and i've found so many of his posts useful).

Hi, Can anyone recommend one of the half price Argos Kingsize mattresses, I was really looking at the Airsprung Maddison or one of the Sealy mattresses any views on these or reviews if anyone has one ?

    Thanks HC
  • Hi all, wish I'd seen this before buying our new mattress. We brought ours from sleepmasters and ordered a firm pillowtop type bed. The bed isn't as firm as the one in the shop and we are finding it to soft. No problem we thought as they do an exchange deal, but after reading the small print and comfirming it at the shop they only exchange mattresses when brought with a base or bedstead. We only brought the mattress.
Anyone else had any joy in returning/changing a mattress they weren't happy with?

Have you discussed with the shop that your mattress is not the same firmness as the one in the showroom? Is yours not so firm because it's on a different type of base?

If it's on a similar base to the one in the shop and there is definitely a difference in the firmness of the mattress, then you have not been supplied with what you ordered based on your decision after you tried out the mattress in the shop.

Similar scenario: a friend of mine bought a 3 piece suite based on trying it out in the shop and liking for comfort and size. When theirs was delivered (not the shop floor model) the seat cushions were softer than the showroom one and they were longer front to back, so much so that their adult daughter's feet did not reach the floor (which they did on shop model). After many discussions and mentioning trading standards (I pointed them in the direction of a thread on here about someone's problem with a DFS sofa) they eventually were invited to choose another suite and have had it exchanged. In fact their new suite was more expensive but they were not charged the extra.

    Hi Bifold.

In reply to both your last two posts. Many of the big brands have lowered their quality recently in order to cut production costs. Sealy are now part of the Silentnight group, and although they used to have a good name, I would now rate Airsprung as better. However Airsprung are fairly low down on the quality scale.

As for Harrison and Relyon, it appears that Relyon have gone the same way as some of the other big brands, and that Harrison may have also to some extent, but probably not as much as many others.

It is for the above reasons why I recommend smaller independent manufacturers, of which most still make their mattresses by hand.

I'v been looking for a Mattress recently for my wife who suffers with horrendous back problems and I read the (now closed) link on memory foam within this very forum.
At the time, I know that Tim was lambasted by three very vocal people (and one person claiming to be a doctor who posted once) and all the while he was asked for proof/verification of his reasons for suggesting a mixture of memory foam and pocket sprung.

Well if it's worth anything, I'v been to a Back Specialist in Birmingham today...a Back Specialist which was advised by my wifes Physio and she tried out three beds:

    * Memory Foam with Springs mattress
    * Medium to Firm Sprung Mattress
    * Medium Sprung Mattress

In my wifes case, the memory foam/spring mattress was the best. We got talking (us and the specialist) about memory foam with normal foam mattress and she said that they used to sell them but now they prefer to only offer memory foam with pocket springs (these springs were one big spring with a smaller one in the middle).

So there you have it, a Back Specialist recommends Memory Foam with Springs or just spring mattess.

Just posting some evidence that what Tim was saying is 100% correct and if anyone wants proof on what I'm saying, the back place is called.. Total Back Centre on the Hagley Road, Birmingham.
