just went into town , looked for coconut or almond flour and couldnt buy any  . Ended up buying toasted coconut flakes - dont know what i am gonna do with it yet  .

I have always only eaten chicken/fish/turkey/dairy and eggs.

my hubby is saying I should start eating pork , because it would open up my diet more and help me loose weight. Yet I cant decide if I should or not :o .
I dont know why but it does bother me , I keep looking at the pork products and thinking if only i could eat that .

Any thoughts on this much appreciated.

jscalow - Well done! I reach my 6 week weigh-in tomorrow and reckon I will be down 16lb and a jean size!

mirry - eek, that choc sounds really bad! Sainsbury's had organic Fairtrade 70% choc half-price recently (69p), and that is 31.6g carbs per 100g. I can usually limit myself to 1 or 2 squares (nibbled very slowly) but my OH and sons have discovered my cache and are munching it like normal choccy. Not fair...it's MY treat!

mirry - ooooh, how can you resist bacon and sausages and pork chops? I mainly eat chicken, pork and fish. Occasionally lamb, as it's tastier than beef, I find. I don't eat anything "re-shaped" or "reformed" as I like to know which bits of animal I'm eating. Sausages are OK if they have a very high percentage of meat in them and are from a reputable source - at least that's what I tell myself!

I forgot to mention that I do not eat low carb for weight loss. I eat it because I believe it to be healthier in terms of insulin triggering inflammation see Dr Sears and the Zone for details. Well actually I suppose you could call my eating plan an old fashioned one. I eat many vegetables but keep the root vegetables to a minimum.

Mirry, I hope you enjoy pork if you give it a go. I eat loads of streaky belly pork after seeing Gordon Ramsay singing its praises on the f-word. as a treat in front of the telly of an evening will also have a packet of pork scratchings. Can you imagine having to explain to people that i've lost 19lbs in 6 weeks by eating pork scrathings? I just lie and say how amazing diet world is !
If you try the pork I reccomend it with aspargus and a knob of butter- lovely, mine is in the oven now.:o

    Daisy -

Sainsbury do a low carb sausage - their Ultimate Outdoor reared one.

Alternatively, M&S do an outdoor reared one that's even lower - they're 97% meat (or possibly more)

They're the ones I buy for OH ;) (and on offer at the moment - 2 packs for 4 quid)
  • Hi really sorry to have to ask this. Just being lazy to save me reading through each post. I did the Atkins low carb diet about 8 years ago when all the rage if you like. I lost quite a bit of weight on it (was a size 16 tight and went down to a size 14 comfortable). I have since put more weight on again since the children and what not and believe this is the only diet that works for me with instant results. My mum did the diet with me initially but now is totally against the diet saying it increases your cholesterol etc etc. Is this true? Mine was checked 2 years ago when had my 2nd child - don't know what it is now however. Do I need to check with my doctor or anything before I start etc or is this diet classed as safe for everyone?

You SHOULD seek medical advice before starting any diet.

I've read studies that show that bad cholesterol is REDUCED by a low carb diet when followed PROPERLY.

You're not allowed to ask for medical advice on here, and we can't give it, so I'd reccomend you do read the thread, and whichver low carb diet book you are thinking of doing BEFORE you start anything ;)

    owsaboutthatthen,
But now, some of the same researchers who long scoffed at the diet are putting it to the test, and they say the results astonish them. Rather than making cholesterol soar, as they feared, the diet actually appears to improve it, and volunteers take off more weight.
Total cholesterol fell slightly in both groups. However, those on the Atkins diet had an 11% increase in HDL, the good cholesterol, and a 49% drop in triglycerides. On the AHA diet, HDL was unchanged, and triglycerides dropped 22%. High triglycerides may raise the risk of heart disease.
    for full post see http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2002-11-18-adkins_x.htm

cholesterol is not even something that I worry about doing this diet- get dr atkins book- any charity shop will have a copy for £1, it will put your mind at rest.
welcome to the diet- good luck, we all love it !
