That is however a somewhat dated article.
There has been a lot of research on a particular vitamin that is particularly related to all cause mortality but I am sure no one here has any clue what that particular vitamin is or understands what relevance that has to the fact that the average adult UK status of that particular vitamin stays in the lowest quartile (the one with the highest death rate) from January through to April.
One could remain out of that particular highest risk group for a mere 4p per person daily. My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

Oh I've solved the mystery of the sugar free jelly cos I bought the ready made stuff. But I bought asda's own brand and rowntrees. The ones I tried the other night were the asda orange ones and they had the texture of melted ice lolly you know that slushy stage and they tasted horrid.Whereas I tried the rowntrees ones tonight and they had the proper texture of jelly and tasted quite nice.So in future I would buy the rowntrees ones
Elona you weighed yourself yet?You have more self control than me:rotfl:

Hello Low-Carbers!
Last night I went to my brother's for dinner and his girlfriend bless her rang me 3 times to make sure that she was making low-carb friendly food for me! We had chicken wrapped in bacon with a stilton and mushroom sauce with brocolli and leeks. Very nice! I was telling her all about the IPD and left the book for her to read so I may have converted someone!
I also took around a low-carb chocolate cake I'd made with some (home made low carb) custard, mmmmmmmmmmmm! Yummy!Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!Goal Weight 140lb Starting Weight: 160lb Current Weight 145lb0 -
Rising Tide of Obesity in America Continues Unabated
According to the report:
* Adult rates for type 2 diabetes have grown from 5.2% in 1980 to more than 8% now. Approximately 20 million Americans have type 2 diabetes, and another 54 million more have pre-diabetes, putting them at high risk for developing diabetes.
* After years of declines in heart disease and hypertension through the development of new medical treatments and drugs, these problems are experiencing a resurgence. One in four Americans has some form of heart disease, and one in three Americans has high blood pressure.
* Obesity and overweight are contributing factors to over 20 chronic diseases, including some cancers, arthritis, and even Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
* Increasing evidence shows that maternal obesity adds major complications during pregnancy, putting babies at increased risk for preterm birth and infant mortality.
* Obese children and teenagers are developing diseases that were formerly only seen in adults. For instance, approximately 176,500 individuals under the age of 20 have type 2 diabetes, and two million adolescents ages 12 to 19 have pre-diabetes. Obese and overweight children are more likely to become overweight, and obese adults are on a track for poor health throughout their adult lives.
* Overall, this generation of children could be the first to have shorter, less healthy lives than their parents.
The culprits for the rising obesity rates are the usual suspects-eating more and exercising less, said Dr. Marks.
As our current policies for dealing with obesity demonstrably aren't working, is it sensible to continue to do more of the same?
With respect to dietary intake, surveys between the 1970s and 2000s do not indicate that total energy consumption has increased.....The evidence shows energy expenditure in Europe and North America has not declined..... Indeed the trends when significant were actually in the opposite direction—suggesting levels of activity energy expenditure may have actually increased over this time interval. My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

Killer carbs - Monash scientist finds the key to overeating as we age
A Monash University scientist has discovered key appetite control cells in the human brain degenerate over time, causing increased hunger and potentially weight-gain as we grow older.
The research by Dr Zane Andrews, a neuroendocrinologist with Monash University's Department of Physiology, has been published in Nature.
Dr Andrews found that appetite-suppressing cells are attacked by free radicals after eating and said the degeneration is more significant following meals rich in carbohydrates and sugars.
"The more carbs and sugars you eat, the more your appetite-control cells are damaged, and potentially you consume more," Dr Andrews said.
Dr Andrews said the attack on appetite suppressing cells creates a cellular imbalance between our need to eat and the message to the brain to stop eating.
"People in the age group of 25 to 50 are most at risk. The neurons that tell people in the crucial age range not to over-eat are being killed-off.
"When the stomach is empty, it triggers the ghrelin hormone that notifies the brain that we are hungry. When we are full, a set of neurons known as POMC's kick in.
"However, free radicals created naturally in the body attack the POMC neurons. This process causes the neurons to degenerate overtime, affecting our judgement as to when our hunger is satisfied," Dr Andrews said.
The free radicals also try to attack the hunger neurons, but these are protected by the uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2).
Dr Andrews said the reduction in the appetite-suppressing cells could be one explanation for the complex condition of adult-onset obesity.
"A diet rich in carbohydrate and sugar that has become more and more prevalent in modern societies over the last 20-30 years has placed so much strain on our bodies that it's leading to premature cell deterioration," Dr Andrews said.
Dr Andrews' next research project will focus on finding if a diet rich in carbohydrates and sugars has other impacts on the brain, such as the increased incidences of neurological conditions like Parkinson's disease.

We could not possibly be thinking that low carb is "real food" that has not been mucked about with so there is no profit in it - can we?;)
In true money saving tradition I have the Idiot proof diet book that I got in a sale and then got a copy of Atkins from a charity shop so saved about £6 on that and a good cause benefitted as well!
Had an omelete for breakfast and then berries and cream as I fly to food when worried!
DD(22) phoned me from Hong Kong where she is on holiday to tell me not to worry but there is a force 10 hurricane or typhoon rapidly approaching!!!
She is on the fourth floor of a skyscraper and has put a mattress against the windows in case they blow in!!!!!
I am making home made rolls and potato and leek soup for later for the family but determined to stick to the plan!!!!"This site is addictive!"

When I started low carbing back in January Low carb soups were my midday staple. I'm now eating hearty salads instead of hearty soups midday but still include meat, fish or chicken with plenty of low carb vegetables.
The commercialisation of Atkins goes totally against the ethos of eating as much UNPROCESSED food as possible. It simply isn't necessary or desirable. Paleoman did not have access to refined processed foods and was taller, stronger and healthier for it. Interesting to read what Herodotus (writing about the 5th Century BC) has to say about low carbohydrate foodsMy weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

I made some Oopsies using extra thick double cream (rather than cream cheese) as it needed using up and they came out ok. They would have been lovely for a pudding with some vanilla extract in.
