  • Thanks for the info Shykins. I managed to get into private messages but it took a while to work out how to get to the message. You see, I usually push all the right buttons ...........but not necessarily in the right order! :)
Sorry about the snow. It was gorgeous here on Thursday, 15 degrees in the shade and probably 20 or more in the sun. (sun-bathing icon here!) But raining and miserable you'll be pleased to hear yesterday and today (sad icon here). Hope you don't get snowed in (or would that be an excuse for an extra day off work?)

    Hi all!

For anyone interested in the relationship between omegas 3 & 6 and their lack of placement in popular conciousness please listen to today's food programme. Radio 4. It'll be available to listen on their website.

William Lands gave a great interview and information from a doctor in Glasgow shows that not all GPs follow Government guidelines when it comes to cholesterol levels.

Of great interest to all those who have or who know someone who has type 2 diabetes. And those who wish to avoid it :D

Ted, this will gladden your heart :D

Thanks I have just pmed them. I would love some low carb vegetian ideas. Love this forum by the way.

I wrote you a really long reply this morning and then my internet connection went down before I could post! Grrr...

Anyway - Gaye is actually my mum so if you've PM'd her with your email address she can send you the "vegan lo-carb recipe book" that I was working on, lots of ideas to get started in there.

There are at least 3 regular veggies on here so definitely possible, though I don't know of an "official" diet that any of us could follow. I actually started off vegan, but then rescued my hens and started eating their eggs, and now have bits of dairy.

My general principle is protein, protein, protein - I'm always thinking about low-carb ways of getting it, which is that little bit harder for us veggies. My staple foods now are:

    - Tofu. Whether braised, firm or silken it's nutritionally ideal and versatile. I now get it cheaply from an oriental supermarket, and have several recipes that I use it for (both sweet and savoury).

    - Protein powder. I use hemp protein (available from Holland & Barret) purely because I like to vary my sources and not overdo soya intake. Other people use soya or whey protein powders but they're all similar - you can add them to a morning milkshake, porridge or use it instead of flour in baking.

    - Eggs. Boiled, scrambled, poached - I'm on 2 a day now and feel great for it. I'm sure the protein levels and vitamin E have done wonders for my skin too!

Of course, if you're a Quorn lover then there's a world of options there too... I spent a lot of time reading the nutritional values on things in the supermarket to get used to what was usable and what wasn't!

Final tip is just to keep coming back - we all post our daily menus on here so that should help you get the hang of what to eat :p Best of luck!

  • Badger, can you send Jpretty the recipe book? You printed it off for me but I can't imagine where you left it on the 'puter. By the way, the tofu cheesecake recipe didn't include the topping! :) Otherwise I've used it quite a bit. xx

I made a pizza from a recipe on youtube for magic pizza. It was delicious, will make it again. Also found a muffin recipe there which I tried and we really enjoyed it. I think my measurements were a bit off though as it was a little dry. Almost like having bread..... lol :D

What is the microwave almond cake? Has anybody got the recipe?

    the one i do is
1 egg, 50g of ground almonds (almond flour) cinnamon and low carb sweetner to taste (splenda, maple syrup agarve etc) mix to a smooth mix in a microwave proof bowl and nuce for 1 min maybe longer depending on your mix and it should come out all cakey. smother in butter and more "sugar" to taste

wicked comfort food kinda like porridge and good alternative to breakfast.

As for doctors in the uk i thoroughly agree that they avoid admitting low carb can be good especially for diabetes type 2 or pcos which has the same traits (me) due to the controversy. But my argument is if it works then what is the big deal. I went to my docs on mon for a repeat perscription and mentioned low carb to which he replied well as long as your not going silly, be careful and good luck!;)

Try to get hold of a copy of Rose Elliot's Vegetarian Low-Carb Diet (Amazon have put the wrong picture up, but it's the right book). She has a fantastic cook book too. I have both, even though I'm not veggie.

This is essentially Atkins for veggies, isn't it? I posted it this morning, though you may not have seen it amongst my daily drivel.

Thanks HC! I wrote that post early this morning so it was a bit out of date by the time I actually sent it :rotfl:

I might actually pick up a copy of that, out of interest and to get new tips... Mum I'm sure you'll borrow it on your next visit :p
