It's refreshing to see no one has dissed low carb here!
I think times are changing from a few years back, if you mentioned Atkins people thought you were on a fad diet and you were harming yourself!

I think the doubters know that before I embarked on following a low carb plan I did my research.

I think everyone who listens to this talk Loren Cordain: Potential Therapeutic Characteristics of Pre-agricultural Diets in the Prevention and Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis will understand why those foods that are most recent in the evolutionary time scale are the ones most likely to cause trouble as they are the foods our bodies have not evolved to deal with.

Sucrose really only came into the diet from 1787
1857 we started fattening beef in feedlots with grain before then it was free range grass fed.
Only 4 generations have passed since we started refining flour to the current extent.
Only 3 generations have experience refined cooking oils and hydrogenations is more recent still.
High Fructose Corn Syrup is the most recent way we have found to add nutritionally empty calories to raise insulin faster and higher and speed the fat accumulation process.
With all these pro inflammatory agents who needs a natural anti inflammatory so we make matters worse by telling folks to stay out of the sun, never to use tanning beds and most women think it better to be dead than have a wrinkle showing how they have aged naturally so they all rush off to get breast/colon cancer and post bright red notices showing the dangers of vitamin D3 when in fact although 16,500deaths occurred in USA last year from NSAID's not one report was received concerning adverse events from Bio Identical hormones such as D3.
We live in a crazy world.

While I am sure that Atkins induction would speed the process. I wasn't prepared to go to the extent of actually counting carbs and eliminating them to that extent. I've got no objections to others who want to trying it. I just couldn't be bothered. All I wanted to do was to see if Taubes was right.

Does one need to exercise to lose weight.?
Anyone who thinks or says it is necessary is a fool or a liar.

Exercise is good for your brain and good for your heart but your body will not be fooled and will adapt to whatever exercise regime you adopt to achieve stability.

Does one have to count calories to lose weight?
    Absolutely not
Every day since January 23rd this year I've consumed more calories than my basal metabolism requires.

Yes I admit it I'm a greedy pig I like eating and don't like small portions and always leave an empty plate. (I'll lick my plate if no one can see)

Does one have to count carbs to lose weight?
Well I didn't and I've lost 2.25lbs weekly since January. I've stopped now because I reached my target and have had a few bottles of wine/beer/Danish pastries and regretted them all. They raise insulin and therefore cause my body to store fat because I eat more calories than I need. If I want to drink and stay the same weight I'll have to make a choice count calories or carbs or do without the wine/beer.

I think I prefer the greater mental and physical performance that comes naturally with low carb eating.

So having obtained an acceptable weight/LDL etc, how quickly would a few drinks etc change the 'acceptable' if you know what I mean.
I must admit having read loads about changing eating habits either to loose weight or improve health I've got really confused. For every article that says 'do this' there seems to be another that says the complete opposite.

Almost instantly. If I drink a bottle of red wine it's extra lbs on the scale next morning and for the next 3 days. It seems to add more weight than the calories contained in one bottle or red, I think the rest must be water retention caused by the higher insulin/carb levels.

I haven't had my LDL checked recently. I'll have a word with my GP this week and see about having another blood test.

The problem is that "official" advice is not based on the most recent medical research evidence.

It's not just Vitamin D3 and the need to get around 30-40 minutes full body sun exposure daily to acquire the 4000iu/daily vitamin D3 our bodies need, but the fact there is absolutely no evidence that cholesterol is itself dangerous, and also the fact that for over 2 million years our bodies evolved without the availability of refined carbs so how come these are now an essential component of our diets. It simply doesn't add up.

If you take "official" medical dogma seriously you will suffer the consequences, it is 20 years out of date and it's about time those responsible recieved a kick up the backside.

not had my LDL or anything checked so cant comment on that

i have been on maitenance atkins for years now and pretty much maintaing my weight (after losing over 8stone).. when i was on holiday a couple weeks ago i ate and drank EVERYTHING!! even had some bread which is unheard of for me, i drank loads, ate all the sweets etc etc u get the picture

when i came home i had gained 8lbs, but within a couple of days of being back on atkins i had lost 5 of those so the actual gain was only 3lbs which isnt bad for what i had eaten... i should also add that i have been on induction since i got back and have lost the weight i gained on holiay already
