Hi Everyone,
Wonder if I can get your advice please?
I have been doing the Cambridge Diet, and been getting on quite well with it, lost just over 2 stones so far, thats since Oct 08.
My problem is that it is getting quite expensive, but since it's working I am a bit reluctant to give up, I just dont know how long we can afford for me to keep doing it though.
I did try the Atkins diet, several years ago, before I fell pregnant, and it did work for me, so I am thinking of perhaps trying it again.
I've been reading through alot of the threads here, and you all seem very supportive, even though I see some slaps being issued here and there!!
What I'd like to know is, are there a maximum amount of kcals each day that you have to stick to, and am I right in remembering that its a max of 12g carbs max daily?
Also could someone remind me please how to work out net carbs from food labels? I see some people are also having fruit... this is the big thing I am missing on CD, so is it allowable on Atkins?
Sorry for all the questions.. but seeing how you are all experts I thought you would be the best people to ask!!
If anyone could also tell me how what their weight losses have been on Atking and when you started, then that'd be great!
Thats me... promise...!!
Looking forward to some replies..... THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

hi stacey there is lots of evidence that for people with diabetes lowcarb is the way to go tho this seems to mainly USA based, do a google search and see what u can find
gstir not everyone on this thread is doing atkins some are just lowcarbing and some are veggie so have fruit hence the difference in menus..... if u are to do atkins then the first 2 weeks are up to 20g made up of protein and up to 2 cups of salad and 1 cup of veg all from an allowable list plus 3oz hard cheese and 2 tspns cream... forgeet about counting calories just count yr carbs!!!.... on english packets the carbs u see is the one u count unlike in america
ames if u are doing atkins u arent allowed yoghurt at first sorry
we really need to post a sig saying whether we are doing atkins or another lowcarb plan cos its getting confusing for newbies as well as ourselves when giving answers, i cant remember who is doing what and yes i know thats cos i am the old bird before any of usay it!!!

Good morning all, thanks for all you words of welcome and support.
Well its day 9 for me, and to be honest I have been feeling quite lathargic for the past 48 hours. We went for a nice walk on Sunday, with around 2 miles being on a pebble/shingle beach, which was really hard work, but worthwhile. Yesterday I woke up and my legs were like lead, but I also felt my energy levels were quite low. So at lunch and dinner I made sure I ate plenty of fat.
This morning I do feel better, but still quite tired; I got 8.5 hours good sleep, but still feeling worn out.
I guess this is the stage where my body is adjusting to burning fat, and its probably not very good at it, but hopefully practice will make perfect!
I have not purchased the Vitamin D3 tablets as yet, and I am looking to order some, do you think this will help (in the long term) to pick me up?
TTFNI can't read, and I can't write, but that don't really matter, 'cos I come from the Isle of Wight and I can drive me tractor.0 -
Welcome, gstir, ames and stacey
Stacey, there seems to be a lot of evidence that low-carb (or at least low-GI) diets are best for diabetics (both types) but your OH's doctor will toe the government line and say they are DANGEROUS! However, for many diabetics it's the only way they can keep their BG under control. Perhaps one day the powers-that-be will open their minds and actually look objectively at some of these studies.
gstir, I'm not really following any plan slavishly, but I guess I'm pretty much doing Atkins. I keep my carbs as low as possible, with the occasional treat, and I try not to stuff myself (but I'm never hungry). I don't eat any fruit apart from strawberries two or three times a week. Because low-carbing suppresses appetite (especially if you are in ketosis as a result of an induction period) you'll probably find that you will naturally eat fewer calories. I must admit I did keep an eye on calories for the first month, but I haven't done so since - apart from not putting half a pint of double cream on my strawberries, for example! Good books to read are Atkins, of course, but also the Idiot-Proof Diet and - even if you're not a veggie - Rose Elliott's Vegetarian Low Carb Diet. And there's also Ted's Dr D and I think some people are doing Paleo. They're all similar, just vary a little in strictness, but they all work.
Good luck, ames! I agree with Shykins about the yoghurt - have double cream instead (not the half-fat stuff either) - I like the extra-thick, and buy at least a pint a week.
Today is not my official weigh-day (that was yesterday) but I did step on the scales this morning, as I do every day.And I have broken the 10 stone barrier! :j I haven't seen 9 stone something for a few years now. My weight bounces around a bit, of course, so I probably won't stabilise there for another week or maybe two, but it was SO lovely to see!
Have a good day, everyone.0 -
Hi all,
First week over and I have lost 4lb.Yey!:T :T
Gillian, I am veggie so all i have done is cut out all the high carb stuff like potatoes, bread, bananas, rice, cous-cous, pasta, pastry and especially sugar. I don't count anything but try to keep to things which are low-carb especially things on my 'good' list given to me by Badger Lady.
Did anyone see that Panorama programme last night? That used to be me! It didn't matter what i ate or how much, I was always 8 1/2 stone. For instance, 2 roast dinners with puddings every Sunday! (why is another story!)
It all changed after I had my babies. (Not your fault Badger, just stating a fact!)
lol xxVegetarian. Have cut out all high carb food. Not following any particular plan.Started 20/1/2009. Weight lost so far 29lbs. Target weight loss 38lb in total.0
