Pink68 I've been pondering your query all afternoon as like Sazzy I have always suffered from depression some bouts worse than others and I've got to admit that since low carbing I've found that my mood swings have evened out and I've been on this diet for 3months and havent had a serious bout yet but this may be down to the fact I have better self esteem because I've lost some weight. Also I feel in control of my body for a change rather than the other way round.I have also found that PMT has eased for me too as the week before AF was due I was a very moody mare to be around.I know this probably wont answer your question but I think its a case of suck it and see.So try the diet and see if it helps. The worse case scenario is that you stay the same but theres the added bonus that you might lose some weight

Well, I've just been made redundant today so I'm comfort eating :( Was supposed to be a fasting day, but the canteen served me a vegetable curry with chips, rice, poppadum and mango chutney.

I know it's rubbish, and this is the second time in a week, but I'm normally so good and I have lost looooooads of weight!

Hi all. Can i join in?

I need to lose between two and three stone to get back to a reasonable BMI and have struggled inthe past to stick to any diet for longer than a week.

I've spent the last few days reading this thread whilst at *cough* work, and started trying the low carb (but not the full blown atkins) on Monday.

But whlst cooking the tea tonight i've lapsed big time and eaten a mini chocolate swiss roll and a handful of the kids pasta.

Someone tell me there's still hope for me.....
Welcome Pink68 its a great group on here everyone very surportive ,We all slip up from time to time some of us more than others hope we can all help :j

I think there are indications of a connection between blood sugar levels and mood - but as you say, Ted's the man for info on that
This article shows that low carbohydrate dieting had some beneficial effects on mood.

Psychological benefits of a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet in obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome says The HighProtienLowCarbohydrate diet was associated with significant reduction in depression and improvement in self-esteem.

Elevated plasma glucose in men and central obesity in women are associated with self-perceived depression

Depression frequently occurs comorbidly with diabetes although it is unrecognized and untreated in approximately two thirds of patients with both conditions. The course of depression in patients with both diabetes and depression is chronic and severe. Up to 80% of patients with diabetes and depression will experience a relapse of depressive symptoms over a 5-year period. Depression is associated with nonadherence to diabetes self-care--including following dietary restrictions, medication compliance, and blood glucose monitoring--resulting in worse overall clinical outcomes

I'm sure most of you have sussed that Dr Dahlqvist's plan ~ similar to Atkins ongoing weight loss stage ~ was devised specifically as the perfect diet for diabetic patients because blood sugar is stabilised and variations limited.

I should also make the point that factors that have enabled me to lose weight so easily on this plan I had implemented to control my depression. The 5000iu/daily D3 I was taking mainly for it's effect on mood but I'm sure you all know Low vitamin D status is predictive of insulin resistance
Vitamin D, glucose, insulin, and insulin sensitivity this paper details Possible mechanisms of action of vitamin D on glucose and insulin metabolism. I can summarise them later if anyone is interested.

Similarly I'd been taking 1.5g or the equivalent of six fish oil capsules daily for some time and we know lots about the relationship of a high omega 3 status with regards to lowering depression and we know also that Insulin sensitivity was substantially improved, after an 8-week EPA and DHA administration, so what is helpful for treating depression will also improve the impact of your low carbohydrate diet. I posted a link earlier in the thread to work showing how 1.5g omega 2 daily improved feelings of satiety both during and after a meal so those eating oily fish every other day or consuming fish oil capsules reported less hunger. (and no doubt were less tempted to cheat)

the other supplement of major importance for stress control is magnesium.
Our results suggest that hypomagnesemia is independently associated with depressive symptoms
Dietary magnesium intake is related to metabolic syndrome
Our study demonstrates that Mg intake is inversely associated with prevalence of the MS in older adults. Older adults should be encouraged to eat foods rich in Mg, such as green vegetables
World's Healthiest foods Magnesium for foodsources, remember it's water soluble so if you cook your veg make sure you steam it or use the cooking liquor in the gravy otherwise the magnesium will be down the drain and not on the plate. Stir fry is good for Kale.
