I'm making Spinach and Cheese Bake for dinner this evening and I have conflicting figures for the net carbs in spinach.
- My little Collins Gem Carb Counter book says: 0
- Food Focus (Spinach, raw, average) says: 1g /100g
- The packet says: 1.6g / 100g
- Food Focus (Spinach, raw) says: 4g / 100g
So net carbs in spinach are anything from zero to 4g/100g.
I'm confuzzled!
Can anyone shed any light, please?
Daisy, sorry to hear about your troubles. It's no comfort, I know, but there are going to be a lot of people feeling the squeeze over the next year. Difficult times ahead for all of us.

Here is a link to some new research that shows 1)the effect of GI on body composition is mediated by changes in substrate oxidation, not energy intake; 2) a high GI diet causes insulin resistance; 3) dietary composition can affect physical activity level.
They found the diet with a high glycemic index vs. low glycemic index had
lower fat oxidation, 40% greater body fat and 2.2-fold greater insulin resistance, even though net energy intake did not differ between groups. Of particular interest, the High GI group became less physically active than those fed the Low GI diet.
Those who have listened to the Taubes lecture Will understand why
Simply changing the Glycemic load of the food mice were given made those on the High GL diet go fat and lazy and the ones on the low GL diet get slim and active.
If we are going to get slim and more active the message from this research is to only eat foods with a low glycemic load.My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

Indeed I can!
However I'm a geeky control freak and it makes me feel good to count.I'll go with what the packet says, I think.

If you give the plants plenty of room they don't run to seed and you've free spinach all year. Swiss Chard is much the same but is a bit more frost resistant so better for the winter. They have quite nice leaves/stalks so can be fitted in amongst the flowers and if you just keep picking the outside leaves as they get big you can keep them going for ages.
Growing things is definitely OH's department. This year he's done potatoes, carrots, corn, leeks, turnips, sprouts and cabbages. I shall definitely get him to do spinach next year; very good idea, as we eat loads of it. Unfortunately we've sacrificed a goodly number of plants to our several very naughty dogs, so he's going to have to fence them off or cover them with mesh, as this year we lost so many.0 -
Systematic review of randomized controlled trials of low-carbohydrate vs. low-fat/low-calorie diets in the management of obesity and its comorbidities. another recent review of Low Carb diets to conclude Certainly at 6 months, the evidence is in favour of the use of Low Carb/HighProtien diet. It may not be appropriate to return to a High Carb intake for weight maintenance. A gradual reintroduction while still limiting the intake of carbohydrate may be more appropriate. My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

i suspect the differnces in counts is because some have not had the fibre deducted and some have, especially if one is an american site.. i would go with the packet count myself
never been able to grow chard for some reason, got some lovely moolis growing tho and been giving a load of spinach by a friend, unfortunately i hate the stuff lol
