On all labels do we take the first carb listing or second was re reading atkins the other night and got a bit confused i allways took first reading
in the UK thee carb figure already excludes fibre, whereas in America it doesn't - that's why the Atkins books make such a big deal about net carbs. we don't have to worry because we're already told the net carb figure on our nutritional info label.
I think the second figure you are looking at is the sugar content within the total carb count. sadly we have to look at the bigger first carb number.
if you are looking at nutritional info books it depends on whether they are UK or US.
If i'm wrong someone please shout outMy name is Paula and I am a low carber1/6/08-83kg : 1/5/10-57kg
(Atkins/IPD) 24/1/13 - 69kg! Yikes!

Please, can anyone advise?
I'm nearing the end of week 2. I know that you shouldn't keep weighing yourself, but I felt that I haven't lost any weight this week and so I've been weighing myself to check. And I'm right - I'm not losing (and my clothes feel no looser).
So I bought some Ketostix. I've just used one and, from the resulting colour, it appears that I'm quite deep ketosis.
If I wasn't in ketosis, I'd say that it must be the daily can of Diet Coke, or something else that's stalling me.
But ketosis is ketosis, isn't it? So why is the weight not dropping off me? I'm feeling quite dispirited. :lipsrseal0 -
HC first of all dont be downhearted because there has to be a very good reason why you arent losing and i dont think its down to the diet coke because yes it is alledgedly bad for your health but it doesnt contain any carbs so shouldnt affect your weight loss. But I'm sure somebody will come along and prove me wrong on this:D
How much weight have you lost already
Are you drinking enough cos when eating low carb food the body needs more fluid to digest the food.

This is week 2 for me. After the first week, the scales told me I'd lost 5 pounds. However I need to bear in mind that the day before I started was my birthday, and we went out for a rather large
dinner with lots of wine! So when I weighed myself on Day 1, it's possible that I was artificially heavy from the highly enjoyable binge the previous evening.
Therefore, the 5 pounds' loss may not be entirely accurate. My clothes certainly don't feel any looser, and it did make me wonder where the five pounds had gone from.
I'm drinking 2-3 litres of water a day (but even so, my wee wee is not virtually clear, as it used to be before starting this diet).
As I'm in ketosis I'm going to carry on until Tuesday (my weigh day) and then for another week. If not a lot has happened by then, I guess I'll need to think again.
I feel so well and energetic eating this way, though, so there are at least some benefits, even if the weight isn't dropping off quite as speedily as I'd hoped!
I wonder if Ted can shed some light. He's bound to know all about ketosis etc. With any luck, he'll drop in later!0 -

These images from a medical textbook on metabolism provide useful information ketosis.1 and 2 Take note of the fact it takes time for your body to adapt to burning ketones so it may be just too soon to see the impact. Everyone is slightly different.
you may find reading the posts at this low carb forum will produce the answer. and may be if you explained your problem there a more experienced Atkins user would come up with an explanation but I wonder if you have cut down on calorie/carb intake too much and your body has cut down your metabolism. Dr D says If your goal is to lose weight, then 5g carbohydrate per 100g food intake is suggested.
Atkins Ongoing weight loss expects you to be eating 20-25g of carbs daily and increasing this weekly by 5g each week. I think you may find that if you increase the amount you are eating the weight will start dropping off.My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

u can be in ketosis and not loose and yes it could be the diet coke, u may be one of those people who are sensitive to sweeteners and they could be stalling you.....as i have said before i cant eat nuts cos they stall me, they dont knock me out of ketosis but they do knock me out of loosing weight
one thing u might want to consider initially is tracking exactly what u are eating either here or on fitday to see if u are possibly eating more carbs than u think u are... i cant remember how much is it u have to lose? if u are near goal u may have to look at dairy etc
with regard to the carb figure yes if its an english package just take the first figure, if its american u have to deduct the fibre from the total carb count to get the correct figure .. hope thats clear
yaaay sun!!!When you know better you do better0 -
I'm on Day 12 and I have a couple of stone, at least, to lose, so I'm at the very beginning.
Over the last 11 days I've averaged 1350 calories and 16g carb a day.
I'm fairly sure that's accurate, as most things have nutritional information on the packaging - even eggs, bacon, etc. - so I don't think it's my carb count that's the issue, especially as I appear to be in ketosis.
Ah well, I shall keep plugging away and see what happens!0 -
Over the last 11 days I've averaged 1350 calories and 16g carb a day.
As I've explained many time I NEVER EVER either while actively losing weight or since I've been on maintenance eaten less than my BMR.
Work out your BMR from This calculator
Then work out your calories needed according to your activity level
Harris Benedict Formula
To determine your total daily calorie needs, multiply your BMR by the appropriate activity factor, as follows:
If you are sedentary (little or no exercise) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.2
If you are lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.375
If you are moderatetely active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.55
If you are very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.725
If you are extra active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job or 2x training) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.9
then if you want to lose 1lb a week deduct 500 calories. per day
I think by going too low on calorie intake too soon your body went straight into starvation mode. I'm sure you would do better with more like 1750 calories daily. I think my body knew it could burn off fat with no problems because it had more calories (though low carb so insulin didn't go up) than it knew what do with. So up the calories and up the carbs you need to eat more to lose weight. Calories in + calories out is a load of rubbish. If your body senses that it's into serious calorie deprivation it would turn cardboard into calories in a desperate attempt to keep you going. If you ensure your body has sufficient calories for it's immediate needs then it will happilyrelease and burn the fat saved in adipose tissue so you'll lose weight or inches. My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

I need just under 1800 calories a day (what a good guess, Ted!).
More eggs for me then! (Can't face any more meat...)0
