Do you buy the ketosis strips from the Atkins site?

Once DD has gone out and I have peace and quiet will cook a low carb breakfast for myself.

I get so sick of the raised eyebrows when I eat "anything!"

DH just cannot comprehend that when I cook his favourite pea soup or lentil soup that I should not be having any and if I were to cook something that fitted in for me no one else would like it!

I found our local Boots were charging £9ish a box for the same as a chemist down the road were charging around £5 so watch out. And don't do as I did by trying to extract one strip from the box single handed midflow. I drop the whole box and once they have been submersed they aren't much further use. They are interesting to see how much into ketosis you are. I never got more than a trace, just sufficient to colour the first one or 2 levels But I never went through an induction phase as I'm on Dr D's plan that is more like Atkins Ongoing Weight loss stage. But as I consistently lost over 2lb each week I wasn't particularly bothered so I didn't buy another box.

  • hi sue

did you cook them for long enough? when cool, they should be like soft (if thin) bread rolls.

leave them uncovered now and they should firm up ;)

I have my supplements ready, have a meal plan for the first week (I have to cook for a family, and I don't want to cook a separate meal for me), but I have a question.

Is there a low-carb gravy? Currently, I use Bisto powder (:o), red wine, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, Worcester sauce and vegetable water. Is there a tweak I can use that will make it acceptable to all of us (i.e. replacing the flavouring and thickening agents that Bisto offers).

i use xanthan gum for my thickener for gravy
i spoon of the fat from the roasting tin the add water to the juices - bring to the boil whisk in a reaspoon or so of the xanthan gum powder add a dollop of cream and some gravy browning if needed bit of seasoning and its good to go

i always make plenty and have lots of pots of left over gravy in the freezer for other meals if needed

sue - just some strawberries and half a large plum chopped up with cream on :)

hi HC - I've done gravy on here before ;)

I use a food processor to puree a raw onion, and soften it in butter before adding liquids, herbs or whatever to the right consistency. use more onion if you need gravy for more than 2 or 3 people ;)

which diet are you doing? you need to watch the balsamic and the wine, although if the alcohol is burned off it shouldn't mess with your diet too much ;)

Sorry, tinkerbell, such a LONG thread to read. I'm working my way through it. Sorry if I'm going over old ground.

I wouldn't use balsamic on any LC diet, but as for which diet I will do (next Tuesday, day after my b'day :() - IPD, Atkins, Dr Thing - they are all exactly the same principle, just some will be very slightly slower than others, due to level of allowed carbs. I will be as strict as I can and know that the stricter I am, the more weight I will lose.

    Thank you, daisy, also.

Gravy recipes will go on my planner. :)

    Morning Everyone

Its nice to see we have a fair few newbies joining the thread

I didnt realise that we'd all waffled so much to make this thread as long as it isbiggrin.gif

Tried the cottage pie with cauli topping last night and hubby was impressed but said it tasted of caulispeechless-smiley-040.gifConsidering it has cauli in thats hardly surprisinglaughing-smiley-014.gif

As for the gravy I have to admit to using bisto gravy granules and taking the extra carbs into account IYKWIM.Its quite rare we have gravy any way and it saves the pfaff of making two sets of gravy. As I'm still losing weight it cant be doing that much harm
