ADSIME - You are very welcome.

I am assuming family of 4 means Mum, Dad and 2 under 18's?
Please bear in mind I often take the "devils Advocate" stance and don't mean to put worries into anyones head!
Luggage going missing, that is a risk we all take when we travel. If a case goes missing like in your case with wedding clothes that are (sort of) irreeplaceable (for the wedding anyway - no good turning up afterwards!) THERE AIN'T NO INSURANCE that'll be any good in a short time situation (You in Orlando and your bag goes to Hong Kong, the wedding the next day, it is not going to get there by the time it lands and then they find it and send it to Orlando).
If it is something THAT important I suggest you put the Wedding clothes in your "carry on" so it never leaves your hands.

As far as other insurance goes - I am a little concerned about the "lack of cover" you mention in 2008. First off people that own property and rent it out in Florida MUST have under law LANDLORD insurance and it must be correct (Short or long term). That covers you as a RENTER. Under Florida law you may have a claim against the property owner or their insurers.

Did you make a claim on yout travel policy for loss in this burgulary? There still may be chance to claim this.

The Sheriff deputy (you'll never see the actual Sheriff) is probably speaking about the Landlord insurance never being enough.

Any decent policy will cover you for all your needs (thats why I suggest never to buy on price alone). See the FCO's website for suggestions as to amount of cover and other useful info:
    http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/travel-advice-by-country/north-central-america/united-states

    Anything else - just ask.
    See you in Florida (maybe)

  • Hi FHBrit

Oops sorry for delay. Thanks for your reply.

Yep looking into insurance now as we've only got four weeks before we go, so rush to get everything done now including insurance! We are indeed family of four comprising of me - mum, dad-hubby, kids aged 5yrs and 21 months. (And sis family and few others, a fair few of us altogether) We have a free family travel cover with husbands employer RBS Insurance. Out of interest do you have any dealings with them? Good/Bad? Have looked in the policy booklet. Looks very reasonable when comparing to others, but so complex when reading the whole of the booklet!

Can't take bridal wear as hand luggage as far as we know? I'm going to type lables with all flight info and our contact details and put them inside the case in case anything does goes wrong. Waht a worrier I am!! Last time case was ripped in half but got all stuff back eventually. More worried if suitcase goes missing permanently but think we claimed from airline not insurance last time so hubby informs me.

Interesting what you mentioned regarding landlord insurance cover. Do know that the landlord did rehouse them immediately and called round a few times and was more than helpful, perhaps if he was liable to some degree this may explain why?! They only went through their own travel insurance on return to England and were not covered for camcorder, jewellery, camera etc. tho did get some of their money back. Mentioned to my mum and she confirmed as you pointed out it was Sheriff Deputy not Sheriff that came out to them.

If you get chance can you let me know your opinion of RBS cover. Don't know if to buy a second family policy just in case.

    Thanks loads

Adsime RBS policies are generally not bad.

However they normally have a fairly unusual exclusion on their home and travel policies (I assume you have home with RBS as well). This excludes cover for baggage etc once you have handed it over to the airline.

Thanks for getting back to me. Good of you.

Not got home cover with them just travel insurance but thank you for pointing that out. Will check on this. Cheers.

Adsime if your Home Insurance is not through RBS you may find that they include cover for your baggage when it's in the airline's possession. If they do (Or can add it for a small charge) you will find the cover is far far superior than the cover a travel insurer offer.

Give your home insurer a call and ask them about it
  • Thanks for that dacouch, will look into that today. Better hunt for home insurance policy booklet and give them a ring.

Thankyou for your advice. Much appreciated.

You'll get new for old on your home insurance (Apart from clothing and linen) and have a much higher individual single article limit. Where as the travel insurance takes into account wear and tear and has very low single article limits
