    At the moment I have a $2.7m also a $1.6m and 3 accouts about $575k (out of these 5 - guess who the insurer is on 3 of them?)

    In seven years those are the biggerst I've worked.

    I have seen $3.5m at our hospital. And that case would have a bit more as the case was a trauma emergency and we are not the Orlando Trauma center (US spell!) that is another hospital and this Patient will have separate bills from ambulance/helecopter and the trauma center and their Physicians.

    I hope they pay you commission on what you recover!

    What sort of treatments have incurred those bills?

    It would be interesting to know roughly how much a "Standard" heart attack in Orlando would cost

    Ok - obviously I have to obey privacy laws (HIPAA - FDCPA - FDRA etc etc)

    English patient had heart attack spent 30 days in Cardiac ICU = 2 weeks regular hospital room = $575,789.60
    This does not include ANY physicians -
    ER Doctor - Cardiologist - Radiologist (X-Ray, CT scan etc) - Pathologist - Surgeon - Anethetist - Hospitalist (Dr who visits you on the ward) - Ambulance/Helicopter - Fire Dept EMS - They ALL bill separately.

    I get Commission - why do you think I work here = about $8,000.00 on $575k (if paid in full)

    If your on commission then you should get everyone to Insure with Axa as it creates commission for you when they eventually pay!

    $575k for a heart attack is a lot more than I have heard, they typically quote circa £80k when they do features in newspapers etc. That is quote scary, you can understand the big hike in premiums for the U.S and reluctance to cover older travellers when you see medical bills that high

    oops $575k = $80k = missed a 0 off!

    That case is exceptional I suppopse as they were in CICU for 30 days. Usual it is typically a week or so. Heres what I actually think is shocking;
    Semi - private (2 people) room = even if you are in a private room they'll bill for semi private as the ins co's won't cover full private unless quarantine dictates.
    No medical - just the room and food = $2,500.00 PER NIGHT!
    Te above case ($575k) as CICU @ $8,500.00 PER NIGHT

    Hi FH Brit, great advice thank you. Do you know of any policies that don't exclude you for alcohol consumption? I am worried that if we had a car accident and I had had a few glasses of wine we would be lumbered with massive costs, is that right? All the ones I have looked at seem to have a clause for this in their exclusions. Thanks.

    NICKERS - I'm glad you updated it! I was jut about to lecture you on drink driving!!!!

    OK - A few IC's (Axa is one) will deny your claims if you are over the DD limit (even if not driving they use that as the legal "Drunk" level) as they cosider it self inflicted industry.

    However one of my cases a lady tripped after a drink or two, not drunk but over limit, she was in the rented condo and tripped hitting her head. A reasonable sized bill. The FOS stated that 2 things to consider,

    If a "drunk" decided to walk the tightrope on a high power electric cable = not covered
    If a "drunk" fell over in a situation that COULD have happened sober (trip over lifted paving slab, on ice, untied shoe lace etc etc) then the FOS would rule in favour of the policy holder.

    So as alcohol is a very dodgy subject you need to ask any prospective insurer as to their limits for "social drinking". And try not to get too tipsy!

    Hi FH Brit,

    We (Me my husband and 2 kids) will be holidaying in Florida in August. We have insurance with our Lloyds Platinum account but just wanted to check if this will give us enough cover or if I need to look at other insurance?

    Thanks

    Hi FH Brit, have been googling and found a company called TravSure who are offering a family annual worldwide policy for £100, so very competitive, and they only exclude for alcohol 'abuse', stating this in their newsletter;
    'Our wording will exclude claims arising as a result of alcohol, drug or solvent abuse.The key word here is abuse. We are certainly not saying you cannot drink alcohol , but is very much a question of being sensible. In general terms the cases that are reported usually involve activities and accidents that are considered avoidabe but for the excess of alcohol, and this is normally based on medical evidence of significant excess.'
    Have you had any experience of this company? They sound very reasonable?
