    Nearly free enzyme cleaner here

Just made my first batch and it seems to get stuff clean and smells nice...

I DO find branded dishwash tabs and laundry stuff better- but stock up on offer. Using a decent cleaner means I can do most laundry on a cold quick wash and therefore saves on wtaer and fuel

The enzyme cleaner looks good - I bet it smells lovely. Do you use it all round the house?

I've got two Cherubs so not sure I would get away with a cold wash!

I'm off to Google those crushed tablets - you learn something new every day!

Do you use a 30 quick or normal wash?

I have a fancy washing machine with an eco setting so it's a normal wash plus the eco button which takes about an hr and 10mins, it also has a 1hr and a 30min wash cycle but i don't think these spin it enough.

  • I use economy thin bleach, diluted in hot water to mop the floors with. Costs pennies and gets them clean.

Yep - with a microfibre cloth on the oven and bathroom - but prefer an towelling cloth on the surfaces - no idea why!

I have 2 cherubs/ demons and a sweaty hubby...bedding and towels get done on a hot wash - clothes on a cold one

    Hello,

I know this is true for most of us, but times are tough financially in this household at the moment.

So, I'm looking for any way I can to save the pounds. What are your top tips for saving on household cleaning products?

    Thanks muchly :)

There's lots of different things people use and do, but this is what I do for the major things. It's cheap and works well for me, in fact I prefer these to the other cleaning products as I find they work better.

Soda crystals dissolved in water to clean tiles, bath, sink and also shake some down the loo and scrub. Leaves everything very clean and shiny.

Ammonia diluted in water in a spray bottle cleans glass, metal and takes out most stains in clothes and rugs/fabrics first time.

Here we have very hard water, so descaler could get expensive. But I use citric acid crystals dissolved in water for the kettle, shower head and for general scale removal.

Borax, used with a hot damp cloth is basically essential for removing greasy deposits in the kitchen.

A tin of proper wax polish like Harrells is expensive, but it works very well and will basically last forever in the average size family house. I have the vast majority of a ten year old tin left and I do polish furniture quite often.

Anyway, I don't need to buy a lot of expensive cleaning products with these things available. I do however still buy washing up liquid and washing machine powder. I've not found good alternatives to these so far.

I cannot swear this will work 100%, but I generally have success.

If you have a stain on your clothes, even if you have washed them, what I do is this.

Damp the stain and massage into it soap from a bar. I use either fairy household soap or dove.

Then leave it to dry. When dry it can be put back in the wash and 9 times out of ten the stain will disappear.
  • Bicarb and a toothbrush are great for removing that white hardened deposit left around taps in the bathand sink -if you live in a hard water area. After each scrubbing I poured over a little vinegar.I dipped the wet toothbrush into a pile of bicarb and scrubbed away. For the first time ever since living in this flat,I have pristine and shiny taps in the bath and sink.:)

If you don't have bicarb,I think that baking powder would work just as well,as it is just a mixture of bicarb, corn starch and cream of tartar.
