Re the soda in the WM, I chuck a handful in the detergent drawer (left hand side).

It's a good idea to run your WM on the hottest cycle you can from time-to-time; this will help remove the bacteria 'soup' that builds up if you constantly wash at low temperatures; I do this less often as I wash my towels at 60 degrees. Prior to running a clean wash clean out the filter, first. If you do run the WM on empty you can switch the spin off or greatly reduce the RPM.

You can use white vinegar in place of fabric softenter; stick it in the fabric softener section.

Everything white and shiny -yes. But please NOT the inside of your tea-pot.
The Chinese traditionally like the inside of the pots to turn black. It takes years of tannin to bring out the fine nuances and delicate flavour in the leaf. [I guess its something to do with white reflecting heat and black absorbing].
However if you're hooked on supermarket tea-bags, it will taste awful whatever you do.
  • This is a fantastically helpful thread - thanks! I just have one question though (and apologies if it has already been answered elsewhere). A lot of my furniture is the cheap fake-wood Argos stuff which is damaged when it gets wet. It's fine with off-the-shelf polishes but I'm hesitant to use anything like white vinegar on it. Does anyone have any recommendations for any natural cleaners which won't damage that kind of material?

    Thank you!

I mix soda crystals with Domestos to a paste and use that to clean the silicon, I leave mine on overnight and then scrub with a toothbrush before washing off

I have tried loads of other products but none have worked as well as this
  • Great thread - haven't managed to read it all yet.

Any ideas for heavily lime scaled shower dcors and shower trays.

    Thanks :)

  • Hi

I find viakal and a scrubby (the white ones with sponge on the other side) very effective on my scaly shower. Also Barkeepers friend is fantastic for getting rid of all sorts of mould, limescale and rust stains to name but a few. You may need to use more than one application of viakal and leave it for a bit but it is very good.
  • I have a cupboard full of cleaning products and the house work still doesn't do itself. :D

I have a theory that the better you are at cleaning, the less items you need. Once I have used up my stash I plan to really keep to the minimum. What are the minimum? I have

    dishwasher tablets
    Washing powder
    Washing up liquid
Multi-surface cleaner (would this be stardrops?)
    Bleach
    White vinegar

What else should I consider (eventually, when I've run down or thrown out the current stash)?

That sounds about right, I wouldn't get rid of any other items you have but use them up and not replace them.

I put cola in the toilet and leave that to remove the limescale, the cheaper the cola the better.

  • I'll remember the cola, we end up with some flat half bottles sometimes, so that will help.

I suspect that the best thing for the oven will be to clean it regularly. Apart from baking powder (which only seems to be sold in sachets in our supermarket) what is good for that?
