Hi, my grandmother is incontinent and was wondering if it would get out any marks and stains out of a mattress? Any hints or tips on how to do this would be great as nothing I've done or used has seemed to work.

Unfortunately if you managed to clean the top of the mattress the urine will have soaked through and you cant clean what you cant get at so it will still smell given time. I'd use biolgical washing soaked into hot water to clean the top of the mattress though.

Thanks for reply. Have tried hot water with washing powder and stain does not come out. Would white vinegar and bi carb work? It doesn't smell its just the slight yellow stain. Thanks

I use products bought from Wilkinsons which tend to have very cheap quality products

For example. A litre of Turtle Wax Car Shampoo was £3.49 recently . In halfords , a 300ml bottle was the same price.

I pop in regular and every so often they have quality products at mega cheap prices. Often with foreign instructions , but hey if it saves a small fortune the who am I to complain

hi , I think the fact that the instructions are in a foreign language gives it away.. we have destroyed our small island by buying cheap imports , presumably from china , who would like to rule the world eventually by taking all our jobs and everything else they can get their hands on. cheap and often dangerous imports are ruining this country and in some cases causing ill health and even death in some reported cases , by them being made form inferior products ..
Please buy less if it comes down to money and buy British where possible , before it's too late..

    ^^^^Not true in all cases^^^^

It's perfectly possible that stuff which has been manufactured in the UK for the export market can find itself being sold here. I've seen quite a lot of toiletry products in the local pound shops being sold with the instructions in Arabic and whatnot

i dont think vinegar will change the colour of the stain. Have you tried using laundry stain removers? Failing that, if the mattress is white i'd be tempted to use a weak solution of bleach/water.

Hi, yes, im afraid I've already tried that. I thought the white vinegar and bi carb mix may bring the stain out as other people have suggssted it may do in other circumstances.

Any ideas for homemade ones...just tried distilled water, vodka and essential oils but didn't seem to last very long.
My flat always smells on the damp side so always looking for new ideas..

Poppets? merrecks post was from 2003. WTH?

A lot of goods which appear to be foreign may well be 'frustrated goods'. Made here, in the UK, for export to a foreign market but, for some reason, haven't left the British Isles.

Wilkinsons is one of a number of chains which specialise in selling these and other goods which tend to be on a when-it's-gone-it's-gone basis.

Packs which have out of date coupons, the 500ml diet/max Pepsi bottles, out of date RRPs and so on. Bought cheap on a gigantic scale and still sold for profit.

1 - you're answering a TEN YEAR OLD post (but that's already been pointed out)

2 - can you back these wild assertions up at all - links, perhaps, or references? Reported cases? Where?

  • I've just spent the last hour or so readin this thread and am converted, especially as the smell of most commercial cleaners either gives me a headache or makes me feel sick and hubby hates the smell of almost all fabric softeners.

Got a quick question about soda crystals to soften water in the washing machine - how much should I use and which bit of the drawer? Is it the far left bit (pre-wash I think) or in with the soap powder in the middle? Southampton water is ridiculously hard!

Also, someone mentioned doing a vinegar wash to clean out the dishwasher - do I just bung a load in the rinse aid thingy and set it away?

In return, this is the best hand cleaner we've found for post oily/greasy vehicle repairs - plenty of liquid soap, splash of olive oil (although veggie oil would probably work) and a mixture of granulated sugar and table salt. Oil absorbs oil and stops the soap drying your mitts out and the different textures in the salt/sugar get more muck out of the creases in your hands than just one or the other.

Also don't buy expensive vehicle degreasers - coke, white spirit and petrol work pretty well (just make sure the latter two have fully evaporated before putting engine parts back and don't smoke on the job!)
I don't like chick flicks, I get grazed knuckles doing my own car repairs and I ride a massive cruiser motorbike. To many this makes me a bloke in disguise but to my husband this makes me perfect
