Hello
Just thought I'd mention that the link in the OP doesn't work.
Any tips for a good degreaser for my hob?SPC - Number 14250 -

People have asked about buying large quantities of bicarbonate of soda and other things - I find this company excellent

Can someone advise what the best thing is to use to prevent bathroom basin plugholes from smelling? Mine is pretty putrid smelling at the moment.
Thank you.0 -

Thank you.
I put some bleach down all the drains in the house and the outside drain once a week and leave it overnight to kill whatever might be growing in them. Seems to keep the blockages and bad smells away. Just be cautious that nobody comes along after you and adds other cleaning products or acids (vinegar for example) without knowing the bleach is in there and flushing it away with water first.0 -

Thanks for your replies. I did try putting bleach down the plughole though to no avail, maybe I didn't put enough down there though.
I'll try the soda crystals in the meantime.
Thanks again0 -

Bleach is usually quite effective when the trouble is bacteria in the drain trap, so I wonder if you've identified the source properly? I spent a few weeks bleaching the bathroom drains without results until I realised it was the outside drain causing the smell and it had been coming in the window - recently opened due to the better weather (also explaining why frustratingly, opening the window more wasn't helping!). Oddly enough, the outside drain is on the ground floor, but the smell was travelling up a pipe on the outside wall which had a hopper on the end for the bathroom drains to empty in to. So, smells can travel in surprising ways and unless sniffing the drain is giving a clear message on the source, you might need to explore more.0 -
I have used dry soda crystals tipped down plughold keep adding til you have a little mound over the plughole - add a tiny amount of water and leave overnight. Empty a kettle full of boiled water the following morning. Works every time for me.0

Not read through all these -but have been using bicarb and vinegar to clean for years...don't buy anything else except washing up liquid and bleach (which I very rarely use - a 1L bottle lasts me a couple of years)....
Have always bought 5L of white (distilled malt) vinegar for around £3.00 from Asian supermarket or Cash & Carry (Bookers)- discovered ( on sale of our business) that sometimes they let 'anyone' have a day pass to C&C - it is worth asking at your nearest one...you will need to buy in bulk and pay cash...I used to buy 4 x 5L vinegar...about every 9 months.
Now I've discovered something I think is fantastic :j- from Batleys C&C - (I have membership as part of a group -but they might do day passes)...they do 5L tubs of 80% acetic acid for about £7.50 - you are supposed to dilute 1:20 -so thats 20 times 5L.
I keep some diluted 1:5 for cleaning the loo - so it just needs a splash...
and a friend who sprays vinegar on weeds on her path to kill them - but found it is not so good if they are damp/it rains - has tried the acetic acid but less dilute than 1:20 and it seems to work well...
I wouldn't use undiluted on my chips though - used the 1:5 one for cleaning the shower screen (by mistake) and I felt my hands going 'soapy' as it burned the top layer of skin off ...but a quick hand wash and no obvious damage done...:)0 -
