  • I am slowly reading through this great thread and there are some great ideas :T
So here I am with an empty washed spray bottle and an old dishwasher that can tackle most stains (no I don't mean me but the mechanical variety!)
Greasy/dried food stains are still proving a problem - do I use
diluted gloop, diluted vinegar or is there another homemade concoction that could be prewash sprayed which wouldn't be so chemically (is there such a word?)
May you fill up the great clutterbucket of life and may all of your leaks be in cheese sauce:D
Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without:cool:

I clean mine in warm water with a dash of washing up liquid. I have varifocals that are coated with anti-reflective coating and they always come up a treat. The secret is drying them carefully with a very clean, soft, 100% cotton cloth. A piece of an old white T shirt, for example. I've tried microfibre cloths but they leave tiny fibres on the lenses. Also any grease, even from your thumbprint, just gets spread around.

I use bio powder in the stainless steel sink for this, but I am a little nervous that the biological effect itself could damage the bath surface. I left a bathroom cleaner on the bath too long once (different bath to the one I have now) It damaged it quite badly. Can anyone reassure me on this point?
If you're concerned about your bath, there is a tray available from Lakeland (£10) which is designed for soaking oven shelves. http://www.lakeland.co.uk/oven-rack-soaking-tray/F/keyword/oven+rack+cleaner/product/20228 It's handy for other messy jobs too. It does warn buyers to check the size of their oven shelves before buying, to make sure they will fit right in. If you have a dishwasher, careful organisation of the lower rack does permit one oven shelf or pan support from the hob to be washed in with the dishes.

I have smelly drains, just moved house. Any hints pleeaase!
I have bought some caustic soda and vinegar, but I think the smell comes from the overflow in the sinkj, how do you clean that?

Try taking apart the trap first to see if there is build up in there. I doubt there's much in the overflow itself. Once sorted, use some soda crystals and hot water weekly to keep the drain grease free....which in turn stops it trapping debris which then rots

I've always found a dedicated glasses/camera lens cloth plus warm breath does the trick!

Can anyone tell me where to buy large packets of baking powder to put in sinks, please?

The small packs only do my three sinks once.

    Hi,

I haven't posted on OS moneysaving before so please forgive me if I haven't put this in the right place.

I recently bought Martin's Thrifty book and wanted to try out the vinegar and bicarb for clearing slow running/clog sinks. I had 3 goes using about 2 teaspoons of bicarb and a mug of white distilled vinegar, left over night and for an hour or so and then poured down a kettle of boiling water, but the water still runs away slowly. What am I doing wrong? The last time (lunchtime) i tried the fizz bubled up at the other half bowl sink next to the main one so it must be going through?

    Any tips greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Bear x

    Hi Bear family,

Welcome to Old Style. I have never used bicarb and vinegar to unblock a sink but this is what Penelope Penguin has to say about it.

These threads may give you more ideas:
