Instead of using expensive cream cleaners use a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda on a damp cloth - it works just as well
Vinegar is great for cleaning surfaces such as glass that you want to be smear free.
Essential oils are great for general cleaning too and very economical as you need only a little. Tea tree oil on a damp cloth will disenfect surfaces. If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
Spring begins on 21st March.0 -

on a couple of posts i've seen people suggest mixing vinegar and bicarb, i dont understand how this works. vinegar is an acid and bicarb an alkali, i seems to recal from my gcse chemistry that acid+alkali=water+salt, so effectively you're trying to clean clothes/surface etc with salty water0

I've only ever combined the two when descaling the kettle. I put some vinegar to soak for a few hours in the kettle and for the scale that remained I added a teaspoon of bicarb to get the fizzy reaction onto the scale deposits and left it for a further few hours for a nice clean kettle. I must admit I got a kick out of watching it fizz for a few pence considering the expense I used to pay out for the descaling kits.
Oh forgot to add I've now added a shell to my kettle and have had no build up of scale since! (Only been a few months though, but it's definitely an improvement)0 -
Where the metal racks/shelves are concerned. Put a towel in the bottom of the bath. Run some warm water and dissolve some biological soap powder in the water - you only need a couple of inches of water. Put the metal shelves in to soak (the towel is to stop the shelf causing damage to the bottom of the bath) preferably overnight. Next morning you should find that the shelf comes clean with very little rubbing - works a treat. First saw this tip from Kim and Aggie on 'How Clean Is Your House?'.
It has to be biological soap powder - something to do with the enzymes in it that cut through the burnt on grease etc. You could also try the same thing with very dirty grill pans - should work!
Not sure about the rest of your oven - mine's quite new and I've managed to keep on top of things with it by just giving it a wipe everytime I use it - always best doen while it's still warm. My old one was very mankywhen it finally went to the cooker graveyard.
I saw this on Kim/Aggies programme aslo. I found it works a TREAT on greasy, dirty hobs!! (Tho the hob I used it on was gas/ dunno about electric/halogen/etc)0 -
