I did a pile of research (mostly on this site) before I grabbed my free eye test. This then gets you your free prescription which you can take to any optician online (in my case Fashion Specs Direct ) or in the high street. You enter the prescription online, filling in the info just as it appears on the prscription you got from the optician who did your test. It really was that simple!
Here's some info I gleaned from this site and otheres about how to get free eye tests and the resultant free prescription:
1) You can join Boots Online Health Club – every one who joins gets a free prescription! You can join the Organ Donor scheme too, if you like (no good to me – I haven’t even got a piano to donate!)
2) The current month M&S magazine (£1 or free to &More card holders) there's a voucher for a free eye test. In '’Source' magazine, the free organ for Waitrose and JL consumers, there is a free D&A eye test voucher that’s good through June.
3) Check out the high-street Optical Express and Dolland & Aitchison – they do free eye test promotions from time to time. I think D&A may doing this ‘til June.
4) Some folk qualify for free eye tests because of their status. Ie., if you fall into one of the following categories:• If you are under 16 (under 25 in Wales): OR
• If you are under 19 and in full-time education: OR
• If you are aged 60 or over: OR
• If you (or your partner) gets one of the following:• Income Support.• If you have an NHS tax credit exemption certificate.
• Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance.
• Pension Credit Guarantee Credit.
• Some war pensioners - if treatment is connected with the pensionable disability.
I did this research a little while ago so take a few moments to check out if its still okay rather than taking it as 'gospel', so to speak!
Hope this is helpful to yuo!0 -
Dont know if it's any use, but here's the Asda store finder pager which shows all the stores with an optocal department - http://www.asda-contactlenses.co.uk/optical_store_finder.html0

I already had my prescription, although I don't really know what it all means - but I entered it on the site at https://www.fashionspecsdirect.co.uk and took the plunge.
In the end I ordered normal specs as well as the sunglasses - in fact I ordered both the same frame, so it'll be interesting to see how simialr or different they are.
As long as they turn up before I leave on hols i'll be happy !
thanks for all the info on tests as well - I will need a new test in a few months if I want to order more as I think you need one in the last 2 years and it's ages since my last one.:T0 -

Just received my glasses from optical4less.com. I have to say I was a bit nervous about ordering as I have quite a high prescription (-7.25 ) but nothing ventured nothing gained. I am so glad that i did, they are so good that i am going to order another pair:) .

Cheers. You may walk and you may run
You leave your footprints all around the sun
And every time the storm and the soul wars come
You just keep on walking0
