I'm about a -5 too. I tend to get the 1.67 index frames from the high street, so 1.56 would be too low for me (full time specs wearer ;)). Shame. Their prices are so low!

Does anyone have any recommendations for an online company to reglaze an existing pair of specs, with high index lenses (1.67 or thereabouts) ? I really like my current pair of specs, but the lenses are so scratched I can't see through them. I don't normally bother reglazing, but I spent a fortune on this pair of frames a couple of years ago and it would be a shame not to keep using them, when the frames themselves are in pretty good nick.

Actually, do Costco reglaze specs...? I know they're not an online retailer, but they're normally pretty good value.

Really great thread - I'm hoping to take advantage of an online specs shop soon, as the family guinea pig. I'm the youngest specs wearer, so the most willing to experiment with odd looking frames. If I manage to buy something decent, the older members of the family will follow suit, and it'll save them a fair whack... :money:

I know that www.glassesdirect.co.uk do a reglazing service. I've emailed them tonight to ask what thickness their thinner lenses are - they charge £40 extra for them, so I'm hoping that they are at least 1.67. Will post again when I hear back. Have used them before and it wasn't the greatest experience as they took 3 weeks to arrive and when they did they were wrong! But they were very apologetic and sorted it out in the end. I ordered when they were still having teething troubles a couple of years ago and someone posted about them on here and they were inundated with orders. I'm willing to give them another try if the lenses are thin enough. Their specs start at £15 for basic pair.

Further to the last post, have heard back from glassesdirect who say that their thinner lenses are priced as follows:

1.6 cost £40 extra and reduce thickness by 10% approx
1.67 cost £84 extra and reduce thickness by 20% approx
1.74 cost £127.50 extra and reduce thickness by 30% approx

Hmmm, not looking quite such a bargain now. Still cheaper than the high street though I expect.
  • ... is that you have no idea what you look like in them! This is a big problem for me as I am very particular about what I look like in glasses.

However I have found that glassesdirect.co.uk have a service where they send you the frames to try on for 2 weeks. Excellent service, I received the frames I was interested in within 3 working days.

    Check it out.
  • does anyone know where you can get half moon glasses with prescription lens, a good reputable company

I am going to need glasses as I had an eye test in August and was told I needed them, about to get them checked again to make sure they are no worse (feels like they are!).
Now what to do?? Do I buy them from a store as I can get their advice, fitting, etc etc or do I risk buying them online at a reduced rate??
  • For your first pair its well worth getting them at an opticians , there are a few things about wearing specs you wont realise till you've got them and its best to get help along the way. ( silly things like how nosepads feel, or if you prefer plastic over metal)

Son has bought a pair of bendable specs from glassesdirect, they came last friday and he`s really impressed with them, cost £35.
  • Having bought a pair from goggles4u, where the lens dropped out within the first hour, followed by a replacement pair where the lens was bigger than the frame, and the nose pads subsequently dropped off, I too decided to go to glassesdirect. I got semi rimmed, bendable frames for £31.00. My son had purchased 2 pairs for the price of 1 from specsavers( £165.00 and a con if ever there was one)when the nose pads came off one pair I had to pay £3.00 just to get new ones put on. He has a complex prescription because of a stygmatism, so I ordered from glassesdirect, and tried the £15.00 ones. No extra payment due to the lens, plus a call from the opthamologist checking the prescription. Excellent service and quality of product. He is very pleased indeed.
  • Im after another pair and goggles4u now have added extra lens options and no longer supply my prescription !!

So going to try glassesdirect .......
