Finally after shopping around I got varifocals from Specsavers. If you had the basic frame and basic varifocal lenses, it would have been £79. I wanted glass lenses which are hard to get hold of these days, chose a £39 frame and the lenses were another £74 making £113. Well chuffed, cheaper than glasses direct who were the only online option (apparently they send an optician round to measure you) but their plastic lens option was £95 plus the frame I imagine. And their frame choice for varifocals was abysmal, mostly for men. So specsavers cheaper/better for once.

Noticed they measure your Pupillary distance with an electronic gadget and also use a sort of special ruler thing. This is what worried me about online, the only pair I have ordered online dont feel right (and this was single vision).

Anyway, dont entirely give up on the high street, it just may be cheaper.

If you're on a budget then you'll appreciate Glasses Direct https://www.glassesdirect.co.uk

The glasses seem of a very high quality, but also very cheap. You can upload your pic to see how they would look, so much less embarrassing then doing it in a shop when you can do it in privacy on your own!

I paid under £40 for a nice pair of rimless specs, now used as my main pair.
    Also, big quidco savings!

Glasses Direct - would highly recommend!

    Cheers,
    Robert Browning.

Hi, I ordered glasses online after having a free eye test from Boots, the glasses arrived this morning, but my vision in them is worse than by using my 1.25 off the peg reading glasses, I am struggling to read things with these glasses, which I can read really easily with non presciption ones. Who do I need to contact?

Its utterly impossible to check the fit of your spectacles. Its like buying shoes without knowing your size?

Its nothing like, and actually most people that buy on-line have worn specs before so have an idea of what size/shape etc suits and fits.

Most specs are made in only 2 or 3 sizes anyway and the main variation comes from the style. Once you have purchased the specs any opticians will be able to adjust them if they need it.

Is there an online optician who will put in 1.74 high index plastic lenses with all coatings, in existing frames for less than the £230 I'm quoted by my optician?
