Very simple answer as previously suggested on this site and also emailed to ebay (no reply of course):-

Feedback is not shown until both buyer and seller have left it - once feedback has been left by both, only then will it show up on the history and in statistics.

This avoids the "you show me yours and I'll show you mine" argument.

Of course, you still have the opportunity to reply to feedback comments if necessary.

As a seller, I prefer to wait to hear from the buyer that a) they have recieved the item and b) that they are happy. This can be in the form of an email which is what I request, but more often than not buyers just do it by leaving positive feedback.

Once I know they are happy with the item - either by the above, or by lack of hearing anything from them for a while (!!), I leave feedback for them as I view that our transaction is complete and they have lived up to their "conditions" as a buyer.

As a buyer, I leave feedback when I have recieved the item and am happy with it.

I don't worry in either circumstance about whether the other party is going to leave me feedback or not, if they do, then great, if they don't, then heck I can't do anything about it anyway. It's voluntary and I can only decide whether I leave feedback or not, not for them.

This works quite well for me - over 250 positive feedbacks, 5 years of ebay membership, never been negged and if someone does neg me, my positives should more than show that I'm an honest buyer and seller.

That saying though, I rarely sell anything about £30 value and am not regular or power trader, so I guess when you bulk it up to that level, your parameters change somewhat.

So in other words, if a seller knows you are going to leave negative feedback, all they need to do is wait until the 90th day before leaving it for you. That way their account stays clean and no one is any the wiser for 3 months. Personally, I would like to see negative feedback as soon as it is left.
  • I'm not sure what the best solution is, but I'm currently involved in a dispute with a trader who has not yet left me feedback, and I have not yet left feedback either. I paid for the item weeks ago, but because I filed an item not received claim after the envelope arrived empty and the seller did not give a refund (boring details in "Empty envelope received from USA" thread), the seller has now made an unpaid item claim against me, despite the fact that I have not yet got a refund. I have a 100% posisitve feedback score to date, and I'm annoyed that this unscrupulous individual could be about to spoil it.
I normally leave feedback for buyers as soon as I have their payment, and for sellers as soon as I receive the item if it is satisfactory/as described.

i just leave feedback for the buyer as soon as i know they are happy with the goods,as far as im concerned this is the end of the transaction as both parties are happy and feedback should then be left.

if you leave feedback as soon as theve paid whats to stop them being unreasonable and leaving you a neg(start a dispute) without even discussing any problems they may have and giving u chance to sort it out(even if its not your fault).

i know they can do this anyway but at least if you havnt left feedback they may well think twice about it.

  • I remember I bought something from American eBay, and noticed that one of the seller's previous customers had a feedback score of -1. Curiosity got the better of me, and I checked the feedback to find out why they had a minus score. It turned out that their first eBay transaction had been a purchase from the seller I planned to purchase from, and they had left neutral or negative feedback (can't remember which) because the item had been posted 4 days after purchase. The seller seemed to take satisfaction in leaving negative feedback in return for unfair negative feedback, and pointed out that the buyer's minus score would be a considerable handicap, which I thought was a bit vindictive. It almost deterred me from buying from him (since I noticed he always waited for feedback before leaving his), but since the item I was buying is quite hard to find, I decided to proceed with the transaction. The seller had a few neutrals and negatives, but most were for long delays rather than items not received or not as described. Btw I'm still waiting for my merchandise, but since it's being sent surface mail from the USA I expected to wait a few weeks anyway.

For the first time in 300 or dealings I have a problem in someone not sending the goods, not replying to emails, messages etc. It's not a big amount of money and I have started the dispute process with Paypal ( I am not sure anything happens in any case at the end, even if the seller does not respond to paypal as they are newbies) BUT although I would ike to leave neg feedback can the newbie just out of spite leave negative in return without the innocent party having anyway of removing it. I am reluctant to do "the right thing" as I will lose my 100%.

They sure can and do. Has happened to me recently. The seller left me a big vindictive neg after I negged him for sending me junk and then ignoring me, and the dispute resolution process, and Paypal. He is no longer an ebay member and so the neg I left him serves no real purpose. The Paypal/Ebay dispute process does work but unless the the item you bought had 'paypal protection', you will be hit for the £15 'Ebay protection' fee. Apparently, you can apply through Square Trade to have a mediator investigate your case and if they find in your favour, they can instruct ebay to remove the neg. However, they don't do it for free :(

If you paid using paypal, you can always do a paypal chargeback.*

    * As long as the item in question is 'tangible' and not a motor vehicle.
  • Well that's just plain rude very undignified if I recieve something I pay for it straight away and leave feed back as soon as I get the item. People that wait are just plain selfish, I things it's an awful way to sell or buy and people should be warned about it!

What is one of those? Do you mean get the credit card company to do a chargeback on Paypal? If so, it won't work in my situation because it was paid using paypal funds not a CC. :(
