Weezl -Im amazed at how wel I have done as all my tomatoes are grown outdoors and I was away for 3 weeks and they got neglected  the only thing I can put my tomato success down to is... growing them the old way -called "ring culture".... I cut the bottom off an old pot and sink it into another pot/trough so the plant has more root space..then when you plant your tomato out you sink it down into the compost so its 1st true leaves are just above the top of the compost (the bit of the stem underneath will throw out more roots)
Then you always water them into the bottom pot as the "water roots" are at the bottom... then feed into the top pot..if you water around the top bit the roots grow close to the surface and have less strength .... watering into the bottom forces the roots to "root down" for water ...
You can make the "top pot" from stappled lino etc
That'll be why mine keep falling over then ..........................or it could be the wind
Mine have just started to go red though had a couble of pounds of big ones so far
Still no B N squash though(had a few flowers) did yours do better MrsM i did read somewhere they like it warm so maybe not a great deal i could have done
Courgettes and beans still coming out me ears though got a few cabbage ready too as well as spinach and chard to and lifting the beetroot at weekend
Been trying to use bits up from freezer this week but not doing very good at cooking for 3 instead of 4 (in fact i only now realise how much DS did eat) keep ending up with more leftovers !!!
I really need to do chinese one night as the pak choi is ready and the spring onions and mustard greens too

Thanks everyone for such a warm welcome
Am feeling very pleased with myself, DD didn't each much of the dahl but OH loves it (amazing) confessed after his 3rd (small) helping that there was lots of carrots in it - his face was a priceless "but I hate carrots..."
so dinner (all HM apart from Naan) was -
Lamb Koftas (1/2 frozen) = £1.40
Chutney (1/2 frozen) = 44.5p
Red Lentil Dahl (1/2 frozen) = 48.5p
Plain rice = 20p
naan = 49.5p
TOTAL: £3.03
I CANNOT believe I have made dinner for £1.01 per head WOW!:j
OH is even more impressed...:D
Bashful - whereabouts in Essex do you live? I live in Basildon, my dad lives in Romford0 -

Evening everyone !
We've been very naughty here tonight and I'm ashamed to say we had takeaway kebab !
Bit of a treat though as DD did really well in her SATS (she's 14) so we asked her what she wanted as a treat (meaning maybe a nice book or a diary and she said kebab ! lol)
Back to frugalist way tomorrow though, having meat pudding (hope it comes out as good as my mum used to make it - my first time at doing one !), mash from freezer and runner beans (from the immense supply in the freezer) and apple pie for dessert (also from a freezer batch cook done a couple of weeks ago). Am also finished work at lunchtime tomorrow so should be able to get a bit of an afternoon of cooking in. Planning the coconut loaf, some fairy cakes for kids pack up and maybe a lasagne or three (if I get time!)
Please don't chuck me off this thread for being naughty ! :EasterBun
Promise to be good from now on :A.
:jWeight loss to date 1st 11.5lb :j0 -
I don't think that lapse counts -- it was DD's choice of treat ! I was waaaay over budget for one meal in July, but it was DS2's birthday and his choice of meal. (Still a home cooked one though)
Had elder grand-daughter here for a while this afternoon and I offered her "one of Grandma's special cakes". She walloped the banana muffin down, and asked me to buy some more next time she comes over. When I told her Grandma made them she asked me to make some for her house too next time I make them :rotfl:
So between her and DS2 (younger granddaughter and DS1 have still to be offered one) it doesn't look like I'll get many of any future batches :eek:Cheryl0 -
'd really like to update the index of recipes, but I can't remember where I got to!
Is this any help, Weezl ? In your post on top of that page you refer to fixing the problems in the index - and a quick whizz through the index itself tells me that you have not edited any of the "signposts" after 13th July (soup section).0 -
ah it was you foxy tigger...thanks for coming forward!!!! and thankyou so much, I've been smiling like a cheshire cat...so sad, I was taking pics of just the baskets!!!! Never been to Romford shopping, so whilst looking for Poundland, I couldnt believe how good it was, definately going back, huge poundland and wilko's....cant say fairer than that!!! and whilst there saw a job advert that I am going to apply for...eeek!!!!! so you saved my life in more ways than one....thankyou a million times.
Thankyou to lightisfading for that yummy looking recipe, will definately be giving them a go!! ;-)
Ooooh! Excellent!:D
Romford sounds great;) even just with Poundland and Wilko's!! I used to have a great Wilko's in Worksop where I used to live but here in York I have to travel slightly, as its not in the town centre, and I try to buy things from shops that are near me to save hubby having to bother and saving petrol too!
we need pics of all this stuff you are getting together!!! I think I might do something similar at some point;) if you have any tips that you have found then please let us know!

Just made the lemon curd recipe, its fab, thanks so much. hadn't thought of finishing it in the microwave, will bear that in mind for the next batch.
Worked out really cheap as well, eggs from own chickens, lemons from the tree, homemade butter. Had to buy the sugar, but bought 20kg for $20 I guess thats around 7 pound in UK terms.0 -
And to be even more frugal, I used the lemon peel to make a batch of Limoncello, recipe below
Limoncello
7 lemons peel only
750 ml bottle cheap vodka
3 cups water
3 cups sugar
Wash and dry the lemons then peel as thinly as possible, avoiding the white pith. Place in a large jar and add vodka. Leave to steep for a couple of months.
Then make a sugar syrup with the sugar and water, cool then add to the lemon vodka mix. Leave for a couple of weeks, strain and enjoy!0
