  • ISOM - I think you can probably lay the blame for being an emotional eater on your Croatian genes. We all do it there - we eat when happy, eat when sad, eat when lonely, eat when in company, eat when in need of a good think, eat when we don't want to think about anything... You get the gist.

I never knew, but I think I must have Croatian genes too:rotfl:

Hiya Peeps! A lovely Rainy afternoon to you all!!!

I just wondered if anyone has a recipe for a "no NUTS" Pesto? I am very allergic to Nuts especially penuts but I love the idea of green pesto. I don;t have a food processor as yet (Hopefully having one for our first anniversary;) but I don't know for definite!) I have a hand/stick blender thingy so MIGHT manage with that?
    Any Ideas anyone?
    Thanks :DTigger

You can try this Tigger, what do you think of it? :j

    Pesto without nuts

    large handful fresh basil
    one small garlic clove
    1/2 ounce parmigiano grated
    1/2 ounce fresh breadcrumbs
big drizzle extra virgin olive oil

whizz it all together, can also finely chop extra basil to stir into it

I must admit I have tried the bacon and courgette pasta (it was delicious) and didn't cost me anywhere near £5 because most of it was store ingredients.

I can remember way back in the 80's when it was "cool" to eat readymeals or at least that's what my evil stepmother convinced my dad - i shudder when i think of the crap overpriced M&S meals we used to be fed, i don't think i ate a single portion fresh veg or fruit at home during her wicked reign

Sadly most people can't or won't cook, I dread my DD going to friends after school for dinner as she won't eat readymade lasagnes etc or she returns home begging for chicken nuggets, s'getti hoops and alphabites, many mums at school ask me to make their fairycakes for birthday parties because they haven't a clue - it's sad isn't it

so i hope that the Jamie/Sainsburys campaign will get lots of parents back in the kitchen cooking proper meals for their children

Nearly 2pm and I have sat here at my kitchen bar and read nearly 200 cv's. My head is spinning and now have a completely numbed brain!! Wondering if it can really get any more boring than this!!! *winge over now*

Tigger- You are very welcome for the pesto recipe. I found it online quite awhile ago and have tried it and like it. Not a huge fan of pine nuts in some things and have one grown step son who is allergic to nuts as well. I actually like the taste of this one better than the one with nuts.

Weezl - Hope you and wee Fergus/Fergalina are all doing well and that acid monkey has not had to do too many midnight runs for middle of the night cravings yet!

As for the feed a family for £5 - has anyone ever taken some of the recipes the tv chefs make and look around for what I call the normal mans/womans version of ingrediants and made the recipe that way? I find myself doing that a lot. I like the soundof some recipes and think, blimey the expense of the items, do a look around and rummage and can generally make anything they make, within reason for a fraction of the cost! Hopefully however the campaign as previously stated will wake some people up and realize that you do not have to spend all day in the kitchen to make lovely healthy family meals! I see so many young people that can barely boil water without scorching the pan. I really find that quite sad. Dont get me wrong, I like my takeaways and pizza out from time to time as well but it will never be a substitute for the real thing!

    Hiya shaz,

Never made that chutney alas, do you think you'll just keep boiling til it thickens? Hope it works out ok for you...

I made a saag bhajee in the slo-cooker overnight, so Mr Weezl has something different to go with his dal. I think it will make about 15 portions at roughly 13p each.

He's been in charge of getting his meals out of the freezer to defrost, and seems to have left himself with a dal glut!

Still, It's only now that I'm having to think about batch cooking again. Haven't really done any since the weekend of the pork pies 2 months ago, so that's a huge advantage of batch cooking :D

Ashia, can we please have your chicken makhani and garlic naan recipes? They sound fab!

As Munchki's already said, welcome Donna. That's brilliant that you like this thread! I guess we all feel at home here ;).

Going to asda tonight, so the budget may take a hammering!

About the Jamie meals for a fiver thing, I think all those recipes could be done more cheaply especially by changing supermarket! But I think we all have to start somewhere.

It's not very long ago that once a week me and Mr weezl would have one of those ready roasted chickens, a bag of posh salad and a tub of Ben and Jerry's. Now that's a meal for 2 that's hard to get lower than £6:o:o:o:o:o (one meal for what we'd now do for nearly a week!!!!).

Isom, about this ere pattern for a nappy... Erm, are they not just, ummm, rectangular? :rotfl:Or have I missed something? :D

    Love Weezl x

    Afternoon all

Popped out with hubby earlier to get some fizzy water -one of the few things I won't give up...but at only 19c for 1.5lt its "ok" :p
picked up 2 big caulis @ 69c and a broccoli..planning a huge cauli/broc cheese -with some going into the freezer ;) and I have also come across a recipe for cauliflower cheese lasagne -so im going to give that a bash too -also got 2 good sized chickens -@ €2.69 about £2.12 each and thats not whoopsed  :T ... they are lovely usually -so one is in the freezer and 1 in the fridge..will do it tomorrow and have a roast dinner thursday-then strip the rest off and s-t-r-e-t-c-h it into allsorts again :D

Munchki... I leave ickle tomatoes whole(although hubby has been on the receiving end of biting into whole hot tomatoes a couple of times:rotfl: ), and 1/4 some bigger ones or cut plum ones into thick slices (all nice n rustic :p )..when I bag it up its usually about 250g bags.. thats plenty for the 2 of us... and yep -using onions etc works fine.. I have done some with aubergines, peppers, courgettes, chillies etc ..they are lovely pasta bases;)

I have been out and mown the lawn and emptied out some of the tubs where crops are finished... its glorious here at the moment -shhhhh :D .... lovely and bright but fresh :T ....
I think the rest of my day is going to be spent on the sofa knitting/x stitching oh and sorting out my seed boxes..made a start -just :rotfl: then i can set about planning what im growing where next season :D
right i will get off.... have a great day folks :T

  • Ison creeps in...as much as I can cree in with a lardy ****....I just text your oh weezl...asked him to pop in on the way home to collect stuff...

I lurve the croatian genes theory allegra...am just popping in to get the recipe for some choc brownies as the icre cream cools...so who else wants to be croatian eh? Problem is I think it really only counts if you actually do have the genetics to go with it and I have an 1/8th so that doesent explain my mammoth tendency to eat for anyreaon - ie 100%!! Think its just me! Lovely to have accepted that by the time I'm 40 though!! Will report back on recipe for brownies too...

  • ps shaz re pickle it does generally take quite a while to reduce...I would just keep simmerng for a while and if it doesent work add some flour...
