Mrs M - You may have mentioned this before but how do you roast the toms? do you slice them or chop them up and how many would you say to put in each bag to freeze for later? I would like to try adding onion, red chilis and peppers while roasting, do you think that would work ok? I have always just preserved them in jars, which I must say does take ages so going to try the freezing way this year.
    thank you again :)

  • oo me goodness! This ere threads gone all philosophical and romantic! C maybe we're just doing it wrong eh?!! I was married once, a very long time ago and put this down to learning that you gotta have something in common...like c have had various "blind" dates but havent quite given up hope that my prince will come (!!)...theres life in the old ovaries yet!! (just...if he doesent get a move on it will be too late...I'm nearly 40!). Mind you sometimes it doesent feel worth the anxt!! Maybe I should have answered the very ott email from that guy in new york after all!!! Lovely to hear some of your lovely stories though...very romantic!
Just tasted the peach jam and it was yummy - easy peasy! 3 ibs peaches, 3 of sugar and 3 lemons and a knob of butter. Peel peaches (I shove mine in boiling water after scouring 4 lines around - like 4 quarters) and then chop into small bits. Put in jam pan with juice of 3 lemons and cook until squidgy and soft. Add sugar and once dissolved boil to boiling point. If you want some extra oomph add 3 (I did 6!!) tablespoons of amaretto...the recipe is generally one you can use for pretty much any fruit. Lemon curd is next!

I'm making this today as well funnily enough. :D I use this recipe,I got it off the internet can't mind where and it's been stored on my pc for years now

    Lemon Curd
    2 lemons
grated lemon zest from 1 lemon (optional) does give it extra zing though
50g unsalted butter (I use value marg)
225g caster sugar (I use granulated)
    2 large eggs

I use a bowl placed over a pan of water (not touching the water) so it's like a double bloiler sort of :o but sometimes if I'm short on time & patience I finish it in the micro on low power, blasting for 30 secs at a time and checking the thickness, but I always start it on the stove first.

Heat the water to the point where it's just simmering. If it's too hot and bubbly you end up with lemon-flavoured scrambled eggs. I beat the eggs and sieve them to take any thickened white out before I start, that helps avoid the scrambled egg look too :D

Put the butter into the bowl or pan you're using to melt and then add the sugar and juice from the lemons and stir. When everything has melted add the beaten eggs and carry on stirring until it starts to thicken. It should coat the back of a wooden spoon. Pour the mixture into the clean jam jar.It will take about 15 mins or less if you use micro like me

....a carrier bag of pears off their neighbours tree, not sure what to do with them though, some are still a bit sour tasting, any idea's??????

    Hiya ;) Internet fixed hooorah!

you could do a version of 'poir belle helene' where you peel and poach the pears in a mix of sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and star anise, and then make a rich dark chocolate sauce to drizzle over them. Poach for 45 mins and leave to cool in the sweet mixture, and all the sourness will have gone!

    nomnomnom! :D

On the 2nd-hand furniture & stuff...I was very fortunate to buy a beautiful coach-built pram from family, and a solid wooden SIZE=1]coulda bin pine  but very stable[/SIZE cot from one, & a carry cot on wheels with a wooden stand from another, of family's close friends. All three went through them & I was able to sell it all on afterwards :j

Yes, I looked at all the cribs & fancy changing cabinets etc but with a whimsical eye--much to me muvva's disgust--& everything I had served more than one purpose. The carrycot was ideal for keeping baby safe in the car back then & also for the first few weeks served as an ideal moses basket around the house. As Bubs grew, they slept in the pram, either in the garden or SIZE=1]more often[/SIZE in hall during the day, so they were within earshot but not overly protectively so.

My FIL was so proud of a purchase he got from 'a mate at work' that I was not so keen on, but became a saving grace :o It was around 2doz cotton flannelette "nighties" & ditto nappies--of course I wanted babygroes & new nappies--but the little nightgowns are so wonderfully time-saving & the Bubs looked sssooooooo CUTE! It helped that they were white & so had several good boil washes with the nappies before use :D The nappies came in for bibs, under-the-sheet draw-sheet, reserves for poor laundry judgements & liners for the times when one nappy wasn't enough!

So--apart from various bits of clothes obviously from prezzies once Bubs had arrived & we knew what colour :D --my lot have grown up with recycling in every way possible! I did insist on new mattresses SIZE=1]& another 2doz nappies[/SIZE but the sheets were my grans war-time stash cut up, & they always had new shoes & underwear. My biggest regret was not having charity shops around then cuz jumble sales were definately a risk too far in our locale, but a certain High Street chain of 7/11, who use a bright red insect with black spots as their logo for children's clothes, was my ultimate starting point for clothes & trainers. The bits I got from 'baby' shops was not as good quality IMO, & I could have kissed whoever came up with another idea for budget clothing..Quite Simply ;) more than adequate for growing kids....

Blimey! I didn't know I was being "green"--just trying to survive with what was/is around & being "duck's !!!!!" about it as my old dad would say :rotfl:

.errr...had you heard the one about playing them carefully-selected classical music whilst still in the womb? Visions of me saying to any I had ever had "Right...I know its usually the local radio station on a pop music programme for me....but you, buster, can take your pick between Mozart or Beethoven...LOL"

yes! It's meant to make them really clever isn't it?

Pops off to switch on classic FM....:rotfl:
