ha ha - that is a serious tomato habit you have there MrsM!!

I wouldn't have room to grow that many varieties. I am growing 3 gardeners delight plants and 3 plum tomatoes (can't remember the variety at the mo) in the greenhouse, and 5 plants in each of 3 tubs of tumbling tom (a cherry variety), Too many in each pot tho, will only use 2 plants next time. Don't really have room for any more than that, so have to be really selective.

My mum (67) has that 4 wheeled "wally trolley" its brill.. she fills it to the brim then has a bungy cord to hold the lid down so it doesn't blow up in the wind, which also goes through the extra carrier bag handles when she has got carried away :rotfl:

You should live out here -you see teenager doing mums shop with trolleys -you get strange looks if you are carrying bags out here :p

I think the 4 wheeled ones are great... Im planning on having one when we move back to the uk..im 36 and I don't care :rotfl:

Lesley- That site is lovely :D Im going to log everything I buy and weigh how much it produces and work out the figures... Im sure it comes out much cheaper -plus not using any nasties on it ;)
I got an aubergine plant here for 49c -about 38p and have had 8 aubergines off it so far..a definite saving .....

However I use the site http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/grapevine/ , they have a 'seed swap' area which is great for swapping excess for stuff you can use :)

    Hi again weezl

Just seen ISOM's post - and noted the bit re emotional eating. Well - as I said to ISOM I'm probably halfway between her and you when it comes to how much I function on emotion v. logic. So - with that - I dont do emotional eating....but I do sometimes do a bit of emotional drinking - well within the "boundaries". But logic tells me I shouldnt drink any alcohol at all - except for the odd "being sociable" purposes - my emotions (bad day at work - unfortunately far too frequent!) tend to mean I head for a couple of glasses of wine that I dont really want.

From where I'm standing - it looks to me like you are highly unlikely to be either an emotional eater or drinker. So - from that - if you still feel hungry I reckon its Fergus/Fergalita saying "Mummy....you're not quite getting enough calories and/or nourishment for both of us" and I would have a bit more if I were you. Like I said - we dont want "bits dropping off" - like the odd tooth - because you're not getting enough calcium for both of you.

I do seem to remember there was this experiment a bit back with babies that had been weaned and they had plates of various different types of food put near them to help themselves to - and they had a distinct tendency to head for the healthy items. I think chances are they know what they need (even whilst a foetus) - until they are taught otherwise by Society.
(Mind you - having said that - any kids I had ever had would have been told quite firmly "I'm sorry...but vegetarian it is buster until you reach adulthood and can decide for yourselves" - but, mind you, the poor little things would have quite possibly had "What do we want? (insert as appropriate). When do we want it? Now" as their first words...never mind "Mamma", "Dadda" and their idea of leisure activities would be a leisurely walk - on whatever demonstration I was going on this time:D :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: ). Yep - I am being serious - by the time they had got to 10 they would have known every single anti-war slogan there is......;) :rotfl: :rotfl:

EDIT: Speaking of the requirements of Fergus/Fergalita....as their unofficial Trade Union Representative (now that would be a different Trade Union....start 'em young thats what I say! HEH).....errr...had you heard the one about playing them carefully-selected classical music whilst still in the womb? Visions of me saying to any I had ever had "Right...I know its usually the local radio station on a pop music programme for me....but you, buster, can take your pick between Mozart or Beethoven...LOL"

    :)

Errr....well that would be most of us duly "broken the rules" one way or t'other then....:D :rotfl: I quite see why M.S.E. has put that there...and it is protecting us...if we then choose to get friendlier with our "virtual friends" - well....on our own head be it....isnt it? M.S.E. will have done its bit to keep us safe and if we then choose to swop details....well....people do need to use a degree of judgement for themselves and take a level of personal responsibility for themselves.

I think most of us can judge whether someone is for "real" or no by the time we have read a noticeable number of "posts" by them. I can pretty much tell if someone is for "real" or no and what I think of them after say half a dozen posts of theirs....mind you, with some of the posts on the "unfriendlier" Boards its often possible to tell in one "post" flat....I wont say just who it was on another Board today that I promptly decided after one "post" was obviously extremely arrogant and self-centred (well....we dont have anyone like that on this Board:D ).

    hiya red squirrel,
Have you thought about getting a bike, maybe off freecycle or cheaply from the classified ads. With panniers on the back for heavy goods and a back pack for lighter bulky items you will be amazed how much you can carry. Used to go camping on mine so know you can carry lots. Or like me now, there are funky shopping trolleys to buy which also take loads. Wheeling it is much better than carrying it all Hth.

Oh goodness.. it's a really good idea but it's about 14 years since I was last on a bike!! Having said that, the route to Aldi/ Tesco is fairly quiet so it is worth thinking about... hmmm.

I think I might have to add the local Polish deli into the route too - brought some packets of 'sour soup' mix back from when I was in Poland on holiday, I absolutely love the stuff, and am down to my last packet now. I've looked up the recipe, but it involves 'fermented rye flour' which sounds a bit tricky!

  • hear, hear c or should it be here here?!! I have dne me bit for Ferus and there be some jam and chutney ready for him weezl..he asked me to let you know...have to say I will find it odd of he is a she now!! Can I call her Fergus anyhoo?!!
Re the swapping things I think the site are cautious because people an be vulnerable and leave themselves open to all sorts of dangers...I hope, like C, I am discerning but even then make sure that if I have arranged to meet someone that I do so in a safe place and in public with someone knowing where I am meeting, who and when and if I havent phoned by x time to call police...there are some nutters out there and you really cant be too careful. Thankfully our weezles were just lurvery and only of the slightly eccentric nutter kind so we get on well!
That apple cake looks lovely - I assume cooking apples are ok? I have three left from chutney and was wondering what to do with it!!

Another here who doesn't hand out her address to "all and sundry", but makes a judgement after chatting for a while on boards. To date I've not had a problem :)

Totally appreciated the choice of the lady who gave me the apples from her neighbour to meet in the entrance lobby of a local supermarket -- plenty of people around, and no risk of me raiding her neighbours trees for additional apples in the middle of the night :A

our future baby's had it then :rotfl: as between us we like pretty much every form of rock - from 80s hair metal to modern day hardcore punk (not that crappy sum-41 style stuff).

the vegetarian baby thing is rather hotly contested isn't it? I plan on bringing said future-baby up on a very well researched veggie diet and pooey to anyone who tries that 'pushing your beliefs on your baby' rubbish ... because of course you don't give your child ANY of your beliefs as they're growing do you? :rotfl:

    yay for hippie-babies!

I never said *I* agreed with the rule, did I? ;) I met my OH in a chatroom, and it felt so safe and 'right' that I ignored my normal 'safety rules' on meeting internet people. Good thing too as we're still together 5yrs later :)

If the parents are both vegetarian, then I wouldn't for one moment expect them to feed a child on anything that wasn't vegetarian. The one time I know a child's diet became an issue was where Mum was vegetarian but Dad wasn't.

I won't cook different meals for different people (with a few exceptions, such as when hubby and I have braised liver as none of the kids would eat that), so why on earth should a parent be expected to buy, prepare and serve something for a child on a daily basis that they wouldn't eat as a complete family. And that's aside from the fact I know a number of vegetarians who (quite rightly in my eyes due to their choices) won't even touch foods that aren't vegetarian -- and also aside from the increased fuel costs in preparing two different meals

Our neighbours are from India (their parents still live there), but we don't force/expect them to feed their twins on a European diet -- and given their diet is (at least in the main) vegetarian I've never understood why people make such an issue of a 'white british' parent opting to raise a 'white british' baby on a vegetarian diet
