    home made yogurt help please!!!

i know i've read about it on this thread or elsewhere, but can't find it now!

i've been given an electric yogurt maker from lakeland ....

very excitedly i heated, then cooled my full fat local farm milk (less than 6 hrs old!) as i didn't have any UHT and was too impatient to wait till i got some, and added that to the yeo valley natural organic pribiotic live yogurt. then put it in the yogurt maker (which is basically a huge bottle warmer with a lid!

excitedly looked at it 8 hrs later ... just runny milk. decided nothing to lose ( i can't abide yogurt drinks! ) so left it overnight, this morning i have a nice thick something, a bit more like soft cheese than yogurt!

think i'll add it to something/make a savoury dip out of it!

anyway! please can someone tell me the best yogurt to use as a base and is UHT the best way to go on the milk front? i was hoping to use the local dairy milk, but having to heat it up and then cool it defeats the object in my mind!

    THANK YOU.

its a horrible wet day here, i've walked the school run and have to go out to childrens activities in a moment! i'd rather stay at home with a cup of tea!

    have a lovely day all

what do you do i mean the work from home think if you don't mind me asking is it really hard to be disciplined ................... a friend of mine in sales used to put a suit on when she worked from home to get in the mindset

    Morning Shaz

What I do is sales/marketing and PA/Administgrator to the 4 company directors /database programmer and administrator. I also do much of the IT work/questions and have fingers in well both feet in our current recruitment drive as well! Some days I am very very busy and other days things are a bit more relaxed but I am generally rarely bored! As for the suit, well that is not me...normally it is trackie bottoms or something very casual and always my slippers. I generally only have to go in the office once or twice a month sometimes less so no point dressing up. Yes, sometimes it is very hard to focus on work, like today for example. It being friday I would much rather tidy the house, sort stuff out and with this weather....cross stitch in front of the telly. Currently am working at the bar in the kitchen so watching the rain and just put a couple gammon joints in the slow cooker for tea and sandwiches for the freezer. The one thing I can say is that I never take it for granted that I can work from home as I know that if I dont keep up with what I have to do i will not only no longer be able to work from home but wont have a job full stop! Enough motivation for me!

Sorry for the lonnnng waffle, I seem to do that a lot lately:o

    Morning all

oooohh SHAZ.... thats the ratio we use to make coleslaw too :T ...great minds n all that :p .. Mind, depending what I have in that needs using, I also make it using, greek yoghurt, tzatziki, quark etc ...in varying combinations :rotfl:
I love HM coleslaw and potato salad -but can't stand shop ones ;)

I have this recipe for chunky vegetable relish (looks quite like the ONE ;) )
I haven't tried it but i will post in case its any use-you can always swap some of the veggies to suit what you have to use:-

    Chunky vegetable relish
    makes 3lbs
    1. 8oz carrots -peeled and 1/4" diced
    2. 8oz swede -peeled and diced
    3. 8oz onion -skinned n chopped
    4. 1lb cooking apples -peeled, cored n roughly chopped
    5. 8oz small cauliflower florets
    6. 4oz sultanas
    7. 2tbs molassses
    8. 3tbs tomato puree
    9. 2tbs lemon juice
    10. 1 clove garlic- skinned and crushed
    11. 6oz dark brown sugar
    12. 1pt malt vinegar
    13. seasoning
    14. 1/2tsp ground allspice
    • Blanch the carrots for 4 mins in boiling water -drain well
    • put all ingredients in a preserving pan and heat slowly, stirring until the sugar dissolves
    • boil gently for about 40-50 mins, stirring occasionally until the vegetables are just tender and the contents of the pan well reduced -if it becomes too dry add 4tbs water and continue cooking
    • spoon into clesn, dry, warm jars -cover and seal
Loocyloo - I make yoghurt too -only recently started mind, Im not sure where the thread is -but I know people add milk powder with the milk and yoghurt to make it thicker.. I have tried it -but didn't like the taste  . I will have to get some different milk powder and try again. If mine comes out a bit thin I use it on my meusli instead of any milk ;)

Munchki.. we are sort of in the west-ish :rotfl: near guttersloh, padderborn etc... Hohne is right next to belsen
I think that some of the blackberries we fetch on monday may get made into another blackberry grater bake/cake i made before..it freezes really well and is lovely ... not great on the waistline but hey ho...

oooh lost another 1lb this week :j don't know how but i won't complain :p

hubby left for golf at 5:30 this morning  and won't be back much before 10pm.. so i have got lots of crafting planned :j ... well it pases the day without costing me anything ;) .. have allready done loads of x stitch this morning..so i will swap to knitting later... I'm on my 14th square so far -not bad for a couple of days :T .... will be a while before it can be called a "blankie" :rotfl:
I also want to get a couple of draught excluders made.. 1 for the front door, 1 for the basement door that is in the hall and a big one for the patio doors.. they are double glazed doors -but i bet draughts still get in ;) -not this year they don't :rotfl:
right enough waffle.. hope everyone is well.. have a great day everyone :D

I dont have the problem unless there is a huge crisis happening. I usually end up ringing them if I need something otherwise it is communication fully by email, blackberrys, text. Lots of work to do but as it is not a typical company never boring and no need for me to be in the office. Everyone is based from home however they all go off and work in factorys etc. So just the payroll and myself are the female staff and fully work from home.:j

I've just made some yoghurt sucessfully :j Always made it for ds and dd1 when they were tinies then just got out of the habit and forgot how to do it! Anyway I used the recipe on the grocery challenge thread - heat 1 ltr of skimmed UHT so it's warm, I do it in the microwave, add 8 heaped tsp of powdered milk and a small pot of starter yoghurt (used yeo valley, then have used some of my own, will need to use more yeo valley after about the fifth attempt I think from memory). This gives a fairly thick yoghurt, looks a little lumpy at first, but a quick stir with a fork sorts it out.

As I said though, I've only just started making it again, so you might get much better advice from somebody else! I just put mine into a big flask and leave it overnight to do its thing!

thanks for this mrs M its on the stove as we speak i pretty much followed the recipe but replace the cauli with courgettes and added 4oz dates ,used black treacle instead of molasses and used mixed spice as that was all i had

smells like i might be on the right track though;)

probably add a bit more sugar later as i always find most chutney too vinegary sweet tooth i guess

I am entering the rhubarb and ginger chutney i made earlier in the year(and sent to weezl) to our village show next week as well as some marmalade and a fruit cake
