jtb.....just a thought, but you could go forraging for blackberries, there are lots and make jams with those, then its just price of the sugar, thats what i was going to do then I found out none of the family particulaly like it, so it was strawberry jam all round!!!!
Not sure if it was you or not that bought the cheap baskets????Do you mind me asking whereabouts??? I have bought a few baskets from bootsales but I dont think any of them are going to be big enough now:mad:
I'm a frugal wannabe

Hi Bashful (West Sussex here so not too far from you
)
I never thought about blackberries so thanks very much for that  ! I have been 'collecting' but only if I go past somewhere and see them. I think I might have to make more of an effort now !
I got the baskets when we visited my MIL in Suffolk. There is a shop called The Warehouse Shop and I got them from there. I think they were reduced as they had orange stickers on them (I think original price was about £4.99). Also have two wooden handles on the side so pretty sturdy !
We have nothing like that round here (apart from the usual £1 shops) but I never seem to find any good deals on baskets (hence me buying about 6 of them in Suffolk).
Do you have a Warehouse Shop near you? Not sure if they are country-wide or just specific to Suffolk.:jWeight loss to date 1st 11.5lb :j0 -
Ooh! I would love the Tomato and Chilli chutney! and the Tomato one and the courgette one??!!! Sounds lovely!
I havn't grown my own Toms so I am not sure how much it would cost for Tom and Chilli chutney?
Love your comment anyway :T
Ps. I also spotted some really nice baskets in Poundland the other day? Its funny where they put baskets and rattan stuff can be easily missed if you are not looking for that kind of thing?
Hope that helpsHi again !
I have to confess to being a chutney and jam maker and have been busy 'producing' for everyone this Xmas (also doing some hampers). Plan is for 2 chutneys, 1 jam, 1 Xmas pudding and some kind of biscuits/sweets.
We're growing our own (first year) so it hasn't cost us that much to do (apart from spending the money getting everything started  - will save money in the long run though
. I've made tomato and chilli chutney, plain tomato chutney, green tomato chutney and courgette chutney (people will be getting a mix ! lol)
Jam wise, not sure yet as I haven't really had much fruit this year. New raspberries were put in earlier this year, but will produce no where near enough. Rhubarb crowns only moved into place this year so need to let them get established (although I must confess to having 3 lots off it earlier on in the summer - it was growing so well !) So, i'm a bit stuck on what Jams to do. If anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful !
Have made other bits and bobs (redcurrant jelly, apple jelly from local crab apple tree - free of course! and some rhubarb and ginger jam).
I've been fortunate enough to get plenty of jars from local freecycle group and my MIL's friend (from the allotments) gave her a preserving pan which she in turn gave to me :j (she's already got one).
If anyone would like any of the chutney recipes, i'll happily forward them.
Also got some baskets from a warehouse shop for £1 (nice big ones) so i'm hoping everything will fit in them !
One question I do have is whether anyone knows when I should make the Xmas puds? I've read so many articles and recipes and they all differ. I'd be eternally grateful if someone on here has made them before and can give me a little advice
Anyway i'll stop rambling (you'll find I do that quite a bit- i'll try not to ! lol)
Oh, just quickly too, if someone could point me in the right direction of the coconut loaf/cake please, it would make my day.

I will make my xmas pudds towards the end of the month/begining of next month (any sooner and I will eat them and have to do it all again  ).. I make them and once cool -stand them on a square of greasproof and wrap, then wrap in foil (if you just use foil..it will tarnish and can taint the puds).. then i will give them a drop of alcohol every couple of weeks until they are needed.... ooooh I LOVE xmas pud... MORE than Marmite even

Help! I'm about to start making banana muffins (recipe from Munchki in post 2709), but am confused before I start....
The recipe says 280g flour, but I'm not sure if this should be plain or self-raisingThe recipe also has 1tspn each bicarb and baking powder, which is the only reason I'm wondering......

Thanks for that. Heaven knows how I missed that one?!?!?!?!:rotfl::rotfl:

I think (please someone correct me if I'm wrong !) but if you're using baking powder then it should be plain flour? I think the baking flour and plain flour work the same as self raising. That's the way i've always thought it anyway:jWeight loss to date 1st 11.5lb :j0
