Mrs M, treated myself to a magazine today called Grow Your Own because it has an article in it about growing salads over winter.

loved reading it and was tempted to subscribe, but my (very small) house is already bunged up with far too much paper and too many books (loads of which are cook books, I love them!). And anyway, it's not very OS is it to subscribe to a magazine that has a cover price of £3.45 no matter how much they take off for a subscription!

October is the time to sow broad beans, esp Aqua Dulce, and I actually still have a couple of neglected plants in the raised bed that I could use for seed, so I think I'm going to give that a go - using the seed I mean, I usually sow broad beans in the autumn.

The winter salads can be grown anywhere indoors or even in a cold frame, so greenhouse, conservatory, windowsill (tho might be a bit dark there )

He recommends using the type of mixed salad greens that I used in the raised bed very successfully, so Bright and spicy mixes (greek cress, mizuna, mustard and pak choi) , Niche Oriental Mix (komatsuna (never heard of that)mizuna and rocket), or Stir Fry Mix (mustard, pak choi and texel). Should be in garden centres or any of the current catalogues.

Once germinated, thin to 10cm apart. Harvest at 10cm tall, about 6-8 weeks after sowing, taking outside leaves only. Water sparingly in the mornings.

In another article, the author recommends also sowing leaf radish, mustard, leaf chicory, peas for the shoots, komatsuna again (aah, he says it is also called mustard spinach) or chard from mid-sept to end of Oct. Pots can be taken outside in spring and should be cropping until mid April. Apparantly slugs adore komatsuna, so precautions need to be taken!

If anyone wants any further info from the mag, just shout

I'm def going to give that a go, I love leaf salads, the watercress is prolific, but a mixed leaf salad is the best I think

2 green apples, peeled and chopped
    250 g raisins chopped
    1 cup white sugar
    1 cup brown sugar

    Pinch cayenne pepper

Wash the rhubarb and cut into pieces. Bring to boil with all other ingredients. Simmer uncovered until deep brown and quite thick.

I've long since given up on the cookery magazines -- I've yet to find one that does budget meals, and even one I saw recently which billed "budget meals" was feeding a family of 4 for a fiver -- not what I call budget cooking

Did pick up a couple of the kitchen garden type mags (including the one mentioned) last week, as I find them quite interesting. But before I think about buying them more frequently or subscribing I need to dig out all the ones I bought 2 or 3 years ago. It may be that I already have enough to cover the jobs for a full year, so won't need any more.

Am actually looking at placing an order with The Book People to get some books as Christmas presents (mainly for grand-daughters, but possibly also for nephews and a friends boys), and was wondering whether it would be worth adding Alan Titchmarsh's "The Kitchen Gardener" to my order  Does anyone have this, and if so what do you think of it. Is it worth £8.99? (There's no way I'd pay the cover price of £20)

Cooking is fraught with difficulty for me atm, my kitchen is being revamped and I have no oven and hob is really in the way of the work so while I want to make things I am finding it very difficult, there is gallon of rhubarb wine, some of that rhubarb chutney, Christmas pudding and cake all itching to get moving, would like to get it done this month if possible. Must also get some salad greens in...think OH has sown some in greenhouse, and some broad beans, they were great this year but unfortunately not enough for my liking.

Re above recipe, it does not have any vinegar. I have made it a few times and it keeps well.

This link was on another thread but very interesting about a teacher that managed on £1 a day for everything for a year. Now she's written a book about it.

Congrats on the baby news Weezl and AM. Someone else to join your adventures. :D
