well I've just gone out (impatiently) in the rain and emptied out the potato sack. There were a few decent sized ones and lots of teeny ones, so should definitely have waited a bit longer. Once weighed, the crop was only just over a kilo, which isn't much, but better than nothing. So, lessons learnt
using a potato from the fridge grows a decent spud
half way down the sack was a bit dry, so water and feed them more
    and be more patient

but will def be trying again next year

Bashful, I don't use any special soil, but yes, slugs do love the little plants. I tend to grow almost everything in pots in the greenhouse and plant out when they are a bit more able to look after themselves. To deal with slugs, I put a bottomless pot around the plants, digging it into the soil, and stick copper tape round it, and then I go out with a torch and a big boot after dark, get loads that way and things survive.

Mrs M - I haven't saved seeds to date, I didn't think F1 hybrids grew true and everything sold seems to be a hybrid. Do you get successful results with your saved seeds?

If I was more organised, I would record all the crops we get as veggies cost an arm and a leg these days. Maybe I'll give it a go next year. Anyone tried growing salad over the winter? I tried rocket in the greenhouse last year and it germinated fine, but then just sat there until the spring, so there didn't seem to be much point as I didn't get a crop earlier than I would have done anyway. The greenhouse is unheated, and I don't think it would be worth heating to grow stuff over winter, I'm sure it would cost too much.

Helped my daughter move on Tues and went to Asda which is 2.5 miles from her new house. I have to drive 15 miles each way from mine. While we were there they marked down iceburg lettuce to 5p, so rushed over and got a couple - I love a bargain!

That has given me great idea for Valentine's next year - kinky hankies! Or, more likely (!) love heart type sayings in the corners. Cute! Thanks for that Bashful (hope I haven't made you even more Bashful with that suggestion there :o )x

just found this for you on the bbc good food website

All cream should be kept in the fridge and used within two to three days. UHT creams should be treated as fresh cream once opened. Creams, in their 'raw' state, are generally unsuitable for freezing but clotted cream can be frozen for up to a month and double cream and whipping cream can be frozen for a month if lightly whipped first. When incorporated with other ingredients, such as when making ice cream, cream freezes well.
