I've found a bit of my geek :j I actually weighed up the packets of meat I sliced up yesterday SIZE=1]Thanks for the use of the electric slicer Mum![/SIZE & have salvaged 500g of the turkey thigh joint & 900g of gammon. Obviously there were the inevitable crumbs, gristlely bits+a wee bit of fat & skin from the gammon & obvious carver's perks :p

The turkey was £4:48 a kilo I think, & this piece of gammon £4:42 per kilo. Both were roasted in the oven Gas Mk6 for 2.5hrs, when the oven was turned off but I left the meat in there to carry on cooking. Both joints were wrapped seperately in a cheapie line of foil; took approx 30mins using an electric slicer; 7 small budget sandwich bags & two larger ones to freeze the packs.

In conclusion, we now have 1400g of pure meat to use for sarnies/ cold-meat-n-mash for an outlay of approx £10, equating to 71.4p per 100g...is that right Weezl?

sounds like great maths to me! Well done on the thriftiness :T:T:T that's half the price of pre-prepared sliced hams, which are often reconstituted and have added water, whereas yours is pure meat. Amazing bargain! :money::money::money:

    Morning all you lovely lot

Just had a poddle outside -thought I would make the most of the "no rain" moment -sure it won't last
But whilst I was out there I noticed most of my beans seem to be getting a second wind and are flowering and producing more goodies :j ..fetched off enough for another meal ...so they will go in the freezer as we are having jackets with cottage cheese and salad tonight (one of our faves :D ).. I also fetched in some more tomatoes for the window bottom to finish off..still loads out there..and more seeming to be growing too :T

I can't wait to get started again next year... I got 9 of those metal rose arches in the end (well at €2 euro each it would have been silly not to ;) ).. and im planning on growing beans, squashes up them..
I have decided not to have that patiogrow stand and cover for my birthday from hubby..I have figured that i can get more for my money buying things here ;) so hubby is giving me the €120 instead :j .....that will get me more of the big black tubs etc that i can use, seeds etc :D

I have a day of x stitch planned for today mixed with a little knitting
thrown in ;) as I have everything sorted that I need to today -afterall -jackets n salad take no prep at all :p

Im still trying to use up some of the stuff in the house in a vain attempt to make some freezer space :o ..but it like the magic porridge pot..i take stuff out, it just keeps filling up ..and im not shopping so its not that  . Still I guess its better than being short of food .. I think its the bags of roasted veggies from the garden and stewed free apples n blackberries that are adding to it at the moment -not that it will stop me from doing it :rotfl: ... We are planning a blackberry assult on Monday..so then i will use the last of my free apples up.... and after that any more blackberries we fetch will just be tossed in a bit of sugar and frozen....

Ashia.... Do you not like fruit n veg much? I think I have always eaten tonnes and its not often im not in double figures with my 5 a day :rotfl: ... Hubby got me some grapes yesterday..he is well trained as i love black grapes most and they are better for you..but he knew that as green ones are 85c a 500g tub at the moment and black €1.70 -i would rather have 2 tubs of green :p ...if they last until saturday morning i will be amazed :p

right folks i had better get back off to my sewing..have a great day everyone :D

Good Morning everyone *big hugs and mugs of tea all around*

DH is off at a job interview....keeping fingers crossed! **update** Just heard from DH who is out of interview, went very very well and should hear next week if he got it!!
Am sat here trying to do some proper work, but just cant seem to get into it today but will do in the end.

Been thinking about xmas and gifts and decided to do hampers/gift boxes for all the family as all the kids are grown now and mostly paired up :) I have been making jams and chutney like mad....so all done with that. Ordered a mega pack of yankee candles (received today) lots of items and will be perfect in the boxes/baskets. Just need to make some quillows or maybe no-sew blankets (never seen one of them so not sure if good enough for pressies) Have all the fabric for the quillows and still need to make the xmas xstitch cards and a couple other pressies.

Trying to figure out what is for tea tonight, think it is going to either be toad in the hole (have never had this personally but DH loves it) or perhaps pork chops and rice in mushroom gravy!

I just really wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone for your shared stories, support and amazing recipes. I have learned so much and have seen our costs fall dramatically!

Thank you again everyone, you are very much like a warm and cuddly jumper that gives that comfy and cozy feel good feeling.

Well have waffled enough, back go watching the kitten play with a polystyrene peanut out of the box (very funny) and to get some paid work done! Apologies for going seriously off topic, just wanted to share!

  • Mrs M, I have grown small pumpkins called Jack Be Little for a few years now. They look like halloween pumpkins but are one portion sized. I slice the top off, scoop out the seeds and roast them. Once roasted you can eat the skin as well. It is easy to slice off the top when they are young, but get pretty hard as the season progresses, they store well too, but the skin goes like iron! So then I just roast them whole as I can't get the top off without using an angle grinder!!

You can stuff them with anything you like, nothing (what I do most often) or some butter, salt and black pepper. Yum Yum.
They would look lovely growing up your arches, and each fruit would not be too heavy for the stem growing that way. What variety are you planning? I don't have room for an arch, but I may be able to squeeze in a trellis up a fence and was thinking of growing Jack's up the trellis next year - they are currently romping over the sides of the raised beds and all over the garden paths
