Weezl - Im interested in the research about eggs, I always thought if I ever got pregnant how would I survive without them, me love the scrambled...its like my brain.

I'm having a really weird day today, like I'm in totally crazy land, but everyone else is very very sane. Oh well, here we go again, I'm at work and its going soooooooooo slow.

Gonna have to try the banana muffin recipes, love nana bread so these could be an alternative, and he might eat them too, specially if they have choc chunks in them.

    Better go do some work...argh!!!!

My research about eggs and pregnancy:

can I just say before I begin that I know that understandably the site is very cautious about anyone posting medical advice and threads have been closed for this reason. I am mindful of this rule, and will definately word my post accordingly!

The next paragraph is advice to no-one, it is an explanation of a decision I have made. It is under no circumstances to be interpreted in place of medical advice from anyone's own GP/midwife etc...

I really hope that covers it! ;)

Since the salmonella scares in the late 80s my understanding is that the egg production standards in the uk have risen hugely. The invention of the lion mark is a symbol of this.

I read a study that showed that of some 10000 uk eggs tested for salmonella, only less than 1% had traces of salmonella, and of those, only 5% had it present in the yolk or white, it mostly lives on the shell.

Therefore plunging the shells of the eggs into boiling water for 5 seconds before scrambling as normal seemed to me to be a very low risk option.:D

Eggs need to come to a cooking temperature of 71 degrees celcius to kill salmonella. By whisking as they cook, you can raise them to this temperature while keeping them nice and soft.;)

    Hope that's of interest Ashia!:D

We have only lived in this house since 2005, hubby grew up around the area and well I have only been in England since Nov 2001. As for "knowing" you never do do you. I often have a chat or say good morning to just about anyone that walks by the house if I am outside. especially if they look grumpy as it makes them look up and actually smile. mission accomplished! Who knows, maybe I have said hello to your mum??:rotfl:

p.s more about the lion mark:

'The Lion Quality Code of Practice was launched in 1998 and includes compulsory vaccination against Salmonella Enteritidis of all pullets destined for Lion egg-producing flocks, independent auditing, improved traceability of eggs and a "best-before" date stamped on the shell and pack, as well as on-farm and packing station hygiene controls.
The Lion Quality mark, which is a registered trademark, can only be used by subscribers to the BEIC on eggs which have been produced in accordance with UK and EU law and the Lion Quality Code of Practice.
Approximately 85% of UK eggs are now produced to Lion Quality standards.
Since its introduction in 1998, the Lion mark has been extremely successful so much so that, in 2001 a Government committee (the Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food) produced a report highlighting the effectiveness of poultry vaccination in reducing human salmonella cases by half.
This has since been reinforced by the Food Standards Agency which has confirmed the success of the UK egg industry in overcoming salmonella in eggs. In its survey, published in 2004, it tested more than 28,000 UK-produced eggs and no salmonella was found inside any of them.
The status of UK egg production as among the safest in the world was confirmed in a report by the European Food Safety Authority published in 2007. Several EU countries reported levels of salmonella of public health significance on their flock holdings of more than 50%, while the UK figure was only 8%. The vaccination programme stipulated in the Lion Code of Practice ensures additional protection against salmonella for British Lion eggs. '

I remember waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when that the only eggs I gave up when I was pregnant were the raw ones that i used to make hm mayo and the like. Other than that, my obstetrician said eggs were ok as long as properly cooked. Just my humble opinion and in no way is it advice on shouldyou or shouldnt you!

Thanks for that, I've always thought the egg thing a little weird. I mean, way back when our ancestors where having millions of babies a week (okay, maybe a slight exaggeration) they will have eaten alsorts of stuff that we cant now, particulary eggs as so many kept chickens.I know they had high infant mortality, stillborn and miscarraige rate and all that, but chances are it was more to do with hygeine and sickness then eggs. Its good to know that if I become pregnant, I can do similar research and maybe keep on scrambling (or eggy breading, which is my current fave). Obviously depending on the health advise of the time...

When I was expecting mine (especially the eldest, born Dec 1983), not only were eggs and soft cheese "not a risk", I was told and told and told to start eating more liver. I was also told to eat loads of baked beans (have a physcological block on these that means I can't eat them unless cooked into something - and only that way since after my youngest was born) and drink loads of Guiness (have never been a drinker so avoided that, but the people who give advice these days would be horrified if anyone were told to go ahead and drink it nowadays  )

The reason for the recommendations I was given was that my iron count was always down (and got worse in each of my 3 pregancies), but I've only ever had my blood declined once at a donor session for this reason (and one where I was bang on the line, but as it was the start of the Aids thing and people were scared off I told them to take it they could use -- so they did).
