Gawd! I'm sorry to hear that that is possible reason for your dyslexia - guess you're always going to be wondering if thats why it happened and cant help (well it wouldnt help me anyways I do know) in the relationship with your mother. Hope that isnt the reason and that its "one of those things" instead.

Anyways - I saw this book t'other day in the "For Dummies" series....ie about dyslexia - think the title was "Overcoming Dyslexia for Dummies". I rather like that series myself - so thought of you when I saw that one and wondered if you have come across it?

Hadnt thought of it like that tbh...I think I just accept that is how it is and dont feel angry about it if thats what you mean? I am very much of the whats done is done mentality and am very blessed to have a wonderful relationship with mum. We've weathred a fair amount togeather over the years, have worked through it and are very close...one of my biggest fears is how I will cope if she dies before me but she wouldnt want me to die before her either for the same reason! whoever goes first knows that each is deeply loved by the other...havent seen the dummies series and when I had me tests etc they said that aot of the strategies tgey rec I had done naturally as part f my learning...have managed a degree and a masters so havent done too bad - esp for one who was told she was thick and left school wth 3 o levels and was destined for a tesco checkout girl by teachers!
Weezl she now knows the good news and is hugely delighted and has asked to be put on the list and will knit baba sommat...

    Hi ISOM

Well - I'll take me foot out me mouth then - stop "teaching my granny to suck eggs". As you say - you've obviously worked out a lot of strategies of your own - and got good qualifications despite it. I know you've got a good job - so glad of that.

I'll go off into t'corner and shut me mouth up now:D  :silenced:

ALLEGRA - saw your comment re making pasta. Cant recall seeing a recipe for making one's own pasta on this thread - could we have yours purlease?:D

    Pleasure.

This recipe comes from Istria - a region of Croatia renowned for its cousine. It can often be found on the menus of posh local restaurants served with truffle oil - we tended to skip that bit and serve it with a simple tomato and garlic sauce, or just bung them into stews.

To make fuzhi (a dead ringer for penne, now I think of it), you will need:

    400g plain flour
    2 eggs
    2 tsp salt
    water

Sift the flour, make a well in the centre, crack eggs into the well, add salt, and enoug water to make a smooth dough. Adding it bit by bit until you are happy with the texture works best.

Divide the dough into three or four parts, knead each bit separately, then roll out as thinly as it will go. This won't necessarily be extremely thin - don't worry about it, this pasta is meant to be quite robust.

Cut out 4cm squares of dough, then fold the opposite corners towards the middle and stick them together to form a hollow tube shape.

Cooks in ten minutes or thereabouts.
  • Blackberry Muffins
    1 egg
    3/4 cup milk
    1/3 cup oil
    1 3/4 cup flour
    3/4 tsp salt
    1/4 cup sugar
    2 1/2 tsp baking powder
    3/4 cup blackberries

Heat oven to 200 degrees, oil tins.
Put the first 3 ingred into a bowl and mix well. Add the remaining ingred except the blackberries and blend until just mixed then fold in berries. 2/3rds fill tins, dust tops with sugar and bake for 15 -20 minutes
    Cheers

  • Has anybody got a nice rhubarb preserve recipe have loads to use would be greatful for a easy one.

Try this, its great if you're not that keen on vinegar.

    Rhubarb Chutney

    1 kg rhubarb
3 medium onions, peeled and chopped
2 green apples, peeled and chopped
    250 g raisins chopped
    1 cup white sugar
    1 cup brown sugar
    2 Tbs curry powder
    Pinch cayenne pepper

Wash the rhubarb and cut into pieces. Bring to boil with all other ingredients. Simmer uncovered until deep brown and quite thick.

    Cheers

Just wanted delurk to say congratulations! Children change your life. See my signature. ;)

Definitely up your budget to 3 x 50p (or new inflation cost). Also have a separate (unlimited) cravings budget because you can't deny Fergus a mars bar if he wants one.

I developed a craving for exotic (and expensive) fruit when I was pregnant. Not easy to find in the middle of winter....

yey, yey, yey - yey, ya, yey, yey - yey, yey, yey I've a day off!!!!

Hehe had to share, although I've had to get up early coz oh going to work and he's got a train in just under an hour. I'm going with to go to the big Tesco, need to pick up a few bits like eggs, coz he wants that toad in the hole tonight.

Gonna make some of the nana muffins today I think, might investigate prices for the prune-y cake coz I really want to make that. Also gonna do some stuff for the Christmas countdown.

Ill need to get in practise to start costing meals, I did a few 'guesswork' calculations and it doesn't look good...I'm not trying to reach weezly heights, but I do seem to be a little ott. Ahh well, at least I have a day off...
