not on an island but on the north west coast of Scotland, feels like the back of beyond sometimes but it is lovely.I'm quite organised with shopping as the local shops here are way expensive and I can't afford to shop in them very often,I wish I could. I used to keep hens myself but circumstances changed and we had to move to smaller house/garden etc so we couldn't keep them and they went to the farm next door. They were great layers and a lot of fun to have around too. £1.30 is cheapest happy eggs can get just now,in the next village they are £1 so do try and get them from a lovely lady there too when we're passing.I would love to keep them again but our council won't allow it.If I win the lotto I want to have a sanctuary for hens that need a home as I really love them :p

Mrs M, I think I'm going to give some of those a try. My niece won't eat a lot of meat, and those sausages sound fab. :D Thanks!

My boss brought in some plums from her plum tree today and passed me a lovely big bag. Yep, I'll be making another crumble, I think, and I'm looking for recipes for plum crumble bars for the lunchboxes. :)

Oh, and the OH told me he was proud of my cooking, and proud that I was proud of my cooking! I feel so happy!

  • Went to butchers today and bought some trotters for tomorrow's tea, as we're out for lunch for a change, so they can be doing in the slow cooker for our return....also ordered a pig's head for next week from the butcher...unlike the one I got from the hog roast stall this one's costing £4, so I've now left a message for the manager of the hog roast to ask if he can be my regular supplier!!! :D It will be interesting to compare the cooked and uncooked versions, as I was spoilt with it being already cooked last time.

Made some chocolate krispies yesterday, thing I'll have to ration them better as there's about half left :o they are a bit morish and the boys love them....hoping to make some marrow pickle tomorrow morning if I can get hold of some jars, never made it before, so fingers crossed.

I put the bulk of my marrow chutney into the jars the pickling vinegar came in -- and some into empty marmalade/jam/gravy granule jars. Sent a couple of small ones to the chap who'd given us the marrow, and kept all the rest for [strike]us[/strike] me (I'm the only one in the house eats it ;) )

  • Is pickling vinegar different to white distilled vinegar? Could I add spices to white distilled vinegar to use it to pickle with? ;) told you I was a newbie at it lol...and how do you sterilise them?
  • I'm gonna try to make the chutney too :)

Do you think it is too soon to make it for Christmas?

re sterilizing the jars I do mine by giving them a good wash (dries quicker the hotter the water is) and hen put them in the oven in a low heat while you make the chutney - with lids too! Re the vinegar I have used various ones when I've realised I had the wrong type in and all worked fine....the dowager recipe I posted is deeelicious..people in work keep asking when I am making the next batch...treat em mean to keep em keen I say! Mind you some paid over the odds cos they were despirate for strawberry jam!!
carrie that there island sound loverly...can we all come and camp?!!
