    question time from me again.....

the cheapest way for me to buy onions is in large bags, but in the heat we've had the last few days mine have started to sprout. I don't have anywhere cooler I can keep them, and can't use them much quicker (already use them most days).

So while I was chopping both for tea tonight I was wondering whether I could finely dice, bag, and freeze when I get them ? (came to me as I know I've seen both in the freezer sections of the supermarkets, but they're too expensive for me to buy that way). Would I have to do any partial cooking first?

You can use the sprouts as 'spring onion' green bits.

Carrie -- I had thought about taking out and shaking at intervals, so it's great to hear it works :)

Shaz -- thanks for the tip about double bagging :)

not so sure about using the 'sprouts', but I used the ones showing greenery last night - so if I get the rest chopped, bagged, and in the freezer today I hopefully won't have to consider that one ;)

Did DH eat up his nettles like a good boy, or did he go to bed hungry?

I was looking at the ingredients on a packet of fruitella sweets at the weekend. they proudly boast they are made with real fruit extracts, but alongside the other fruits they contain extracts of spinach and nettles! couldn't believe it!

:rotfl: if I see some in the shops when I'm out with my daughter I'll have to show her that....

wonder if that will make her stop buying them for my grand-daughters, as she didn't think much to the idea of eating nettles and totally refuses to eat anything with spinach !!!!

Zoe Girl - any chance of your dough recipe that's suitable for freezing for pizzas please?

Also does anyone have any cookie dough recipes that can be frozen please? I haven't made any biscuits for ages but have just saved the hob nob one to do tomorrow

Sure thing. My fav dough recipe at the moment is a whole wheat recipe.

1 and 1/3 cups warm water
    2 Tbsps oil
    1/2 tsp salt
    2 cups plain flour
    2 cups wholemeal flour
    2 tsps yeast

I do in the breadmaker mainly, on dough cycle large load lol. But I think you can freeze any dough pretty much. I have never had any failures yet...and I freeze all sorts of strange things.

And I recently tried this cookie recipe and froze some...

    Fudgy Choc Chip Cookies

    2 eggs
1 cup lightly packed soft brown sugar
    ½ cup oil
    1 teaspoon vanilla essence
    2 cups self raising flour
    ½ cup cocoa, sifted
    ½ cup dark chocolate chips

Beat eggs, oil and sugar, and vanilla, flour, cocoa and mix to combine. Stir through choc chips. Grease some baking paper and roll up a log of cookie dough and freeze or put in fridge. To cook from frozen or fridge, just slice thinly with a sharp knife and put on a tray. Cook very quickly in an oven at 180C. I made the last batch putting them in the oven as I took dinner out and turning it off at the wall and they cooked fine. I got two rolls out dough out of this, so can cook one lot and then the next lot as you need it.

Experiment with freezing dough to any recipe you like though. Like I said, I have never had any probs. If the recipe tells you to roll it into balls then it should be okay to roll into a log and freeze. If it is a really runny mix and you drop spoonfuls onto a tray and leave em there it will not be...

    Sorry to go on....

Oooh can I have a link to Weezl's blog? I was on the Greenfingered thread last night - want to start, er, something but not very good at doing greenfingered things - so far only have a couple of plants in the flat and a basil plant + parsley plant on kitchen window... trying not to kill them! Want to make better use of our small back patio...

  • :T Thank you ZoeGirl and In Search of Me....now all I need is a emoticon of a drooling face:p;)
Will be cookie baking later :D

Tea last night was a variation of sausage meat loaf.....used two packs of 50p asda sausages, added some sage and onion stuffing, fresh basil from garden and more onion, fried using 1 cal spray to make meatballs.....then used 3 cans of toms, more basil, garlic powder, curry, cumin and chilli powder to make a tomato sauce and used value noodles...eveyone cleared their plate and I've now got 8 portions in the freezer :D and spare tom sauce...not sure of costings as I'm not good at working things out but I think it's inexpensive....
Tea tonight will be using the remainder of the tomato sauce from above, an aubergine, grated carrots and maybe a tin (old storecupboard) of beans for a lasagne....
oh, and I've got Food for Free to collect from the library later today, so may go foraging as well...I'm trying to have a spend free week, and see how long I can use storecupboard ingredients for.....
