I have used Michel Thomas for learning languages and am a huge fan. It's soooo simple - just listen, relax, don't use pens or try to memorise and you just remember it all through his amazing method.
You can get the spanish intro course (2 CDs) which ususally costs £15 this weekend FREE with the guardian and observer newspapers and there is also a half price offer on all his stuff at www . michelthomasoffers . com
This is a really good deal!0 -
Not sure if this has been mentioned already but I can highly recommend this website:
http://www.fsi-language-courses.com/
It offers language courses developed by the United States Government to train diplomats etc. There's over 30 languages on there (including some i've never heard of!) and all the courses are public domain and therefore free to download. I've recently started the Mandarin Chinese course and it is excellent, even though it was developed in the 1970s!0 -
Also, check out Anki for a free flash card utility. You can use it for any language (or anything else you need to remember!) and there are hundreds of user developed card sets that can be downloaded straight from the within the application.

Busuu.com is quite good, it only covers the really basic stuff before you have to subscribe but is ok for getting the drift of a language. Definitely good for kids.0

I am learning Spanish through the free Cactus podcasts available for various levels at the Independent website.
I am using the beginners plus podcasts and they are quite good.

Our local libraries service (Newcastle upon Tyne) has paid for library users to be able to access the full version of BYKI. Maybe other Local Authorities have done the same?0

I would like to learn to read a little amount of Japanese - does anyone know of any free language courses for Japanese
Not free but not very expensive and very easy way to learn - look up Earworms CD's. The reviews on amazon (for European languages anyway) are all true - it does work that quickly and easily. So I would assume the Japanese version is excellent too. You can also look on the Earworms website and hear some examples.0
