I am just buying a house and moving in on Wednesday. The neighbour helped me out and showed me the LPG tank. So I assumed that I would just phone up the supplier and get the gas delivered. Of course it aint that simple!
After reading all the correspondence on the subject, I think I will have the heating changed to coal/solid fuel. How has the situation been allowed to develop? I want to be able to shop around for the cheapest option, not tied to a single supplier. Flogas offered me a discounted price of .39p a litre, which included 5%tax. No mention was made of any other charges. I will be checking out the contract, word for word, and will probably wait until 13 April.

Ironnick, you are not alone!!!!!
I am in a very similar position: forced to sign contract, price stable for 1 year then day after contract expired, the price shot up.
I am curently "in negotiation" with Calor about the contract. I say "negotiation", more a case of headbanging! This is the interesting bit, and I think would apply to you....
If you read the small print CAREFULLY, their standard contract (caluse 6.1) states that they won't increase the price by more than 2.5ppl in any six month period in thw 12 months following the expiry of any Special Entry Price (ie, if your price was fixed in year ONE, it is also capped in year TWO). I am one step off the Trading Standards/OFT/MP/Watchdog/Press route, as Calor seem to be under the misaprehension that I will accept that the prices have gone up and therefore pay them whatever they want me to pay them!!!!
My first letter was a nice gentle one (sent to the head of customer services) saying sure it's an administrative error/computer glitch etc., therefore giving them the opportunity to just say sorry, sort the price out and be done with it. The reposnse to my first letter was "tough, prices have gone up, live with it. And we hope you remain a loyal customer", so this one is obviously a corporate policy decision to rip off the customer,
Second response was the same, but with an added insult of a £50 so-called goodwill payment... Like I'll be stupid enough to accept that instead of a legally binding price that will save me nearly £1000 over the course of the year.
Third letter was "gulp, this guy is serious, better pass it up the line!". Expecting another response in the next few days. If it's not acceptable (i.e., if they're not going to honour the contract as it stands with no conditions etc), I will start making a BIG noise!!!!! (I fully expect them to try oit on and send me a NEW contract to sign with what appears to be a favourable price, and hope that I'm stupid enough to sign up with them for another 2 years before this April!)
Anyway, to cut a long story short, check your contract (clause 6.1), and be prepared for a fight - they are acting illegally, seem to think they can get away with it and really don't give a monkeys!!!0 -
WhooooooooHoooooooooo :j:j:j
Since I wrote my last message just 3 hours ago, this morning's post has arrived, and there was a very nice and apologetic letter from Calor................ Having got their legal bods to look it over, they (finally) agree that Clause 6.1 does INDEED apply for the 12 months following the expiry of any Special Entry Price, and have amended our account and future price accordingly
I knew there was a good reason to stay awake during those dull contract law tutorials at college
I would sugest that ANYONE on contract with Calor, no matter how long ago any entry price expired, would be well advised to get a calculator out, work out whether they were overcharged for the second year and if so, ask Calor for an account adjustment!!!0 -

Hi all,
Moved into a house in Jan that has a bulk LPG tank, which was previously supplied (and the tank is owned by) Calor. The contract they were really keen for me to sign was quite a restrictive lock in one and after speaking and a bit of negotiating they dropped the standing charge and discounted the pence per litre by 12%. This only made me sceptical that they had a lot of fat in the price anyway and there seems to be limited information available on the net about bulk lpg supply (lots of websites that will find you the cheapest supply for a fee!). Seems to be crying out for a MSE article if there are enough bulk lpg owners out there.
Anyway, i read that there is some sort of regulation coming into the market which allows me to choose the supplier i wish and in turn they buy the tank off the previous owners. This seems to be a more market competitive way of doing it, but i can't find out when this is due to happen.
Are there any bulk lpg owners out there that can give me some advice?
