Checked Countywide who have quoted 41ppl, £12.50 quarterly tank rental, and £75 credit; price fixed for 6 months of a two year contract. They've since offered the option of a 12 month contract with the opportunity to fix again.

ExtraFuel have quoted 35ppl, £60 annual tank charge, price fixed for 12 months. Option to go onto their monthly variable rate (currently 39.5ppl), or negotiate another 12 month fix for the second year.

    .

    Hi,
have just moved house and now have LPG which so am new to all of this. We've only got 20% in the tank so I need to get haggling asap so wanted to check, are the prices you've quoted including or excluding VAT ?

Thanks for the info, very interesting as the previous owner was with Countrywide paying 55p L inc VAT.

The prices quoted here will be excluding vat unless stated otherwise. When you ring around for quotes they will give prices excluding vat too.

The vat that will be added on will be at 5%

    LPG COMPARE
I have been in touch with lpg compare and they have got me 2 quotes, one from Avanti at 40p and one from Flogas 38p £250 credit.
I queried the Flogas one saying they are rip off merchants and have had a reply saying that the company are aware of this and the new management team are trying to put this right,
They have assured me that it is written in their contract that the gas can only rise by 3.5 in the second year.

LPG Compare are willing to start the change over for me.

Has anyone used this site and would be interested to hear what anyone thinks

I'm not too convinced about these sites, they must be making some kind of commission, which leads to all kinds of favouritism if one company offers more than others, don't for get they are doing this as a job. (pessimistic, yes but nothing is free anymore)

I have seen a Flo Gas contract and it is in there. However, what he hasn't told you, and I'm not sure if he/she will know this. is, if the increases cap is broken, you are able to cancel your agreement with Flo Gas. what they don't tell you is that they will come and take your tank away including any LPG in it which you may have paid for. they will also charge you for doing this £225 + VAT for above ground tanks and £120 + VAT for underground.

I have read a Flo Gas contract as I nearly switched to them before deciding upon Extra Gas. In all honesty, I think I'd stick with independent LPG suppliers as they seem the fairest in all the dealings I have had. It would also make sense to presume that with lower overheads they can supply LPG at lower rates and I hope I will see that in the coming years.
    :)

Sorry, I suspect quite a lot of that is misleading or untrue:

    - of course they get a commission but if they also get you a lower price than you can get on your own, why should that matter? All switching operations such as uswitch etc work on similar lines. nothing underhand about it

    - if Flogas breach the terms of their contract you can switch to another supplier and Flogas are legally bound by statute, to transfer the tank to the new supplier.

    - why on earth would they charge twice as much to remove an above-ground tank as an underground one?

    - indeed independent suppliers do have their advantages but there are such things as economies of scale so it is best to judge each offer according to your own circumstances.

I would be interested to hear from others with recent experience of Flogas. I am inclined to believe that they really are trying to improve their behaviour and their image, and frankly not before time
If what I said helped you, please "Thank" the relevant post. It cheers me up somewhat..
  • Hi everyone ;)
Just been reading some of the threads on here and trying to work my way through the maze of info. .. I live in rural dorset and have a choice of heating oil or lpg gas. (& electric obviously !) Does one work out cheaper than than the other as a whole? Can someone explain to me a newbie and potential lpg user the pitfalls and positives of bulk lpg and whether to own or rent the tank and who is the best and cheapest provider if the 2 are the same ;)

    Many thanks

    Welcome to the forum.

The oil or LPG question gets asked frequently. Possibly other options too - electric nightstore heaters are much improved and some newer models store the heat until evening (check out posts by e.g. Richie-from-the-Boro in the Rointe thread {https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/65743964#Comment_65743964} ...just avoid Rointe!). You may want to consider having at least two heat sources (if there's a disruption in electricity supply your heating pump stops).

Here are links to earlier posts and threads - you've probably found some already in the "maze of info"! [Someone might like to make an updated list? - these date from 2011 or earlier so prices are out of date even if the arguments stay the same].

    there are lots more!

What you decide will depend on the property, how you live and a host of other factors. For just the fuel costs - per kWh - you can get up-to-date figures from the Nottingham Energy Partnership website. For the total installation costs for your property you'll need to get quotes - and I suggest you ask about maintenance costs at the same time.

I posted about owning your own tank last November: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/...postcount=2121

Some comments* following my post can be replied to here: OFT has no view on tank-ownership, I believe ..but major suppliers were very strongly against it when the Competition Commission suggested it in 2004-06 (the suppliers' names have been redacted but all the stuff is in the National Archives** now, if you've a spare hour or two. Basically, I believe, the big suppliers didn't want users to have the freedom to shop around).

There's no problem with the annual inspection - so long as you get a fill at least once a year (yes, the tanker driver does this - and on my delivery ticket he has to sign off doing it. It's a visual and sniff test!). The 10 yr test has to be done by a qualified Gas Safe engineer (qualified for LPG, that is). These guys also work for the majors, and do tests for mobile home estates, etc. You keep the test certificates (you've paid for the tests. £250 or so rings a bell - but you need to check!) and can show these to suppliers.

At least one person has bought an in-situ tank from their suppliers (it would take a long time to find the post(s)!). There's a price formula produced by the Competition Commission*** - normally used for supplier to supplier transactions. I wouldn't buy a tank unless it was relatively new (suppliers often remove tanks at 20 yrs for a major refurb ..though tanks can, and do, go on much longer). I wouldn't buy a tank if there wasn't a range of independent suppliers available - we know what the majors think about users owning their own tanks!

And, BTW, there are H&S laws but the main thing 'governing' bulk tanks is the industry's (i.e. UKLPG - the trade association) CoP (Codes of Practice). HateLPG got a letter back from HSE in response to a query in 2011: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/...&postcount=844
