Bulk LPG - Cheapest suppliers / supply route?

Hi guys,
I'm leaving a rented property with a lpg bulk tank. I have just been trying to find out from the supplier (Flogas) what happens about the excess gas left in the tank and I have been told that I have to pay for it and then let the next occupier have what's left for free. As this is currently 60% on the gauge a good month or three, which I was informed was worth £502 this not good news. It was suggested I try to sell it my landlord but I don't believe he is obliged to buy it, any help would be brilliant .
Have a look at this...

So will see how we get on with them and report any issues positive or negative here.
So I'm just about ready to place our first order since March, and fingers crossed they don't retract from the 39.95 we have fixed!!0 -
Hi all,
I wonder if anyone has any advice for me...
I'm fuming after receiving a letter from Calor.
I own both sides of semi-detached building, I live in one side and am renovating the other (which is taking some time, 2 years so far and will prob take another year), both buildings are supplied by 1200 ltr Calor tanks.
The letter stated that as I'd not had any gas delivered since before July 2010 and they have high demand for tanks that I have 3 choices.
1) request a tank uplift
2) request a minimum order of 50%, and they will give me £25 credit
3) change my standing charge t&c's and charge me £200 + VAT annually!
I'm currenly paying 56.4ppl
I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions. I haven't spoken to calor yet as I feel I may be a bit too unprofessional and a bit too sweary.
Cheers0 -
Are they talking about just the tank for the empty place under renovation, or both?
I'd have thought a quick phone call to explain the situation would sort it out.0 -
Sorry I wan't clear, yes they're talking about the renovation property tank.
Thanks for your quick reply0 -

OK, just a few quick observations:
a) where exactly in your contract does it state that Calor can unilaterally change your Ts & Cs if you fail to order sufficient gas? (if you can find such a clause, maybe the rest of this post has to be read a little differently, but from a quick skip-read of a 2010 Calor contract, I can't find any such clause);
b) as far as Calor's options 1, 2 and 3 as stated in your original post are concerned: tell them to GET LOST - they are all unacceptable!
c) at 56.4ppl, you are currently paying 10 about 10ppl over the odds (but as a net low user, taken as a whole that may not be entirely unreasonable, depending on your annual usage at the other property) ;
d) If you haven't ordered any gas since 2010, you are almost certainly out of contract unless you have subsequently signed another contract (a contract only lasts for 24 months maximum), therefore you are very likely free to change supplier without penalty (plenty elsewhere on this thread about that). As you are paying 56.4ppl, it might be worth contacting other local suppliers, being up front and honest with them about the situation, to see if you can negotiate a better all-round deal taking into account your circumstances.
e) Beware: if you request an uplift, you will have to pay. If they want to take it, they should be meeting that cost, not you.
As I've stated on this forum before, read your contract till your eyes bleed. Understand it. Then stand your ground. My personal experience with Calor was that they repeatedly tried to tell me I was wrong and didn't understand my contract, but when I stood my ground and refused to budge (I was right; they were wrong) they eventually admitted they had made a mistake and backed down. But it took determination, persistence, lots of letters and several months to get there :-(
Hope that helps a bit.0 -

As you say later, it's very unlikely he would still have a current contract with Calor.
Personally, I don't find it utterly unreasonable of a gas supplier to say "Look, since you don't appear to be using gas, do you still need the tank?" Remember that the standing charge almost certainly doesn't cover the cost of ownership of an extra tank - and, unless they can uplift it, they will need to replace that tank for somebody else to use, assuming we take their line about demand at face value.
BUT - given the circumstances - a quick phone call should get any reasonable organisation to say "Oh, OK - in that case, we'll flag your account so that periodically computer-generated letter doesn't get resent for a while."
TBH, I wish Flo had the same problem, then they might extract digit and collect our old tank...e) Beware: if you request an uplift, you will have to pay.
...and they know where they can put that one...0 -
Thanks for your replies,
Yes I'm out of contract, as such they said they would vary their terms and conditions with a non-gas usage surcharge.
I will give Calor a ring, I just wanted to check my options (forewarned is to be forearmed).
I'm pretty disgusted I'm paying 10ppl over the odds, I'm in the Midlands area WS3 so will ring around for some quotes from other suppliers to perhaps take on both tanks. UKLPG.org shows
Countrywide Farmers Plc, Flogas, Lister, Avanti, Energas, Equal Response, Carver, and Callow.
I was also thinking of approaching other nearby LPG users to see if we could combine orders with a supplier to get a better deal.
Thanks again for your replies0 -
I rang Calor, they've agreed to waive the non-usage surcharge and offered me a new 2 year contract of 48ppl.0
