I've started spending! Had a nsd yesterday but had a massive tesco shop delivered today - £170.77. That's most of the food for the month though and I just need to buy fruit and veg from now on. Hope to get some of that from the allotment. Off to update my signature xx

Oops, just remembered it wasn't a NSD yesterday so i'll have to have one tomorrow. Aiming to have at least three up to the 8th.

I want to make the iced bun recipe on the first page of the thread, however i have no milk powder. Can i just leave it out, or use a splash of normal milk?

  • Afternoon Everyone!

Just popped on to update my sig as did a quick trip to Mr T in my lunchbreak..dodging the rain!..to grab a couple of bags of value 500g mixed fruit which they have hat 41p at the mo so will be doing some cake baking tonight, I will be trying some twinks and the weetabix cake!

On baking can anyone give me advice on where to go to get grains and seeds for putting into the BM during bread making? Mr T has small bags of individual ones but if you buy a few it works out quite expensive so was wondering if anyone had seen a mixed bag. Many thanks.:T

Hope everyone is having a good day!

Hi all. Miserable day here :( But I am going to take this opportunity to do some baking now that I’ve finally caught up with this thread! Already done a loaf in the BM this morning and plan to make a quiche, bread rolls, twinks hobnobs (now that I’ve mastered them :D) and have a go at the apple chutney some kind person posted a link for :T.

Dug a bag of dried “exotic bean mix” out of the cupboard that is slightly out of date (May 08 I think), so will soak those overnight and try to cobble together some kind of spicy bean stew in the slow cooker tomorrow, as we are out for the afternoon. Also found some mixed dried fruit and some candied peel left over from the christmas cake that need using up, so will have to think of something to do with those.

Think the cats must’ve heard us talking about saving money as one brought in a “contribution” earlier! He looked most put out when I chucked the poor little deceased blue tit in the bin before he’d finished playing with it, but I wasn’t keen for a repeat of the last time he sneaked one into the house while I was upstairs and I came down to feathers and bits of blue tit all over the lounge carpet  I love my cats dearly, but catching small creatures and bringing them into the house to play with them is not one of their most endearing habits

Hope everyone's having a good day

Well thats me done some more shopping to tide us over for at least a few days, incl a spend of £15.01 in Lidl (£4.99 was on nappies- he is in disposables at night) and £2.52 in Boots (although got an extra 50 points and also 3 organix kids crisps for £1).
Also got DS some new shoes- the ones in his size that I liked were in the sale- yippeeee :D , although this does not come from GC money.
Turned out lovely and sunny here although a tad windy so the tom plant pots are being blown over a bit!
    Ok, take care peeps.

phew! just caught up on all the posts!!

have managed an NSD today on groceries, but i "treated" myself (if you can call it that!!) to a session of colonic hydrotherapy this morning. it was my firstest ever time (you might recall i was thinking about it a couple of weeks ago) so anyway, i went, and it was brilliant :D very discreet, no embarrassment, and apart from feeling a bit light headed afterwards, i feel great!! apparently i won't start to feel the results for about 12 hours, when things have settled down, but i can really recommend it!!

sorry.....bit off topic there!! anyhoo, i haven't had time to do any baking today, so tomorrow i'm planning on making the iced buns (gunsandbanjos i don't see why you couldn't use a splash of milk instead of milk powder.....you need something like that cos that's what makes it cake-y )

right, best bring the washing in before it flippin rains :o

Asda, Tesco, Co-op, and Sainsbury's don't have any. Can I use dessicated coconut instead? I know it won't have the same flavour but will it kill it?

I POPPED IN TO OUR LOCAL CO-OP STORE THE OTHER DAY AND THEY HAD A GREAT RANGE OF COOKING BITS AND PIECES LIKE POPPY SEEDS AND SUCH THINGS, AND AT GOOD PRICES. ( DO YOU HAVE A CO-OP LOCAL)

I did try my local co-op but the didn't have any. It's only a small one so maybe that's why. The biggest supermarket near me is Asda but for some reason it's closed in the evenings despite having a 24 hour sign outside. I'll try there on Saturday, though they didn't have it last weekend when they left it out of my delivery. If they don't have it, I'll try it with coconut - I found a recipe for lemon and coconut muffins so the combination does seem to exist.

Hi everyone. gosh so many oposts today..

i love the idea of "st peters Mud pie" posted by Cookiedough38. i think i'll give that a go when i get some dried fruit.

just got back from asda again. got 4x 2.5 bags of potatoes for 30p each and 4 x packets of leeks at 30p each. can i blanched these and freeze them?

brought 4 more bags of bread flour. now im using the BM im getting through a bag every two days. 2 loafs a day due to lunch boxes.

oh i found a tub of unopened "allinson dried Active Yeast" it says for handbaking only. is there a way of using it in the breadmaker?

also i need some lentils etc for casseroles and soups. i thought they were pricey for a small bag in asda, any suggestions?

made bread and hubbys birthday cake today, stiil got to ice it though.

"Desperatehousewife " - thank for for the cooking a pizza in a frying pan idea. ill be trying that one later.

i think ive spent about £150 so far but both freezers are full and cuboards nearly full. i will need more fruit and veg, milk, yoghurts as well as more flour and butter by next week. but as for meals i think ive got everything. im not use to spending this much in a week, but i had 2 empty freezers and cupboards that are now full so i think it will be alright.

hope everyone has a good day. its bright here again now.

off to make pizzas and finish the cake.

    Hi determindtosticktothis
I buy mine at the food weighouse if you have one of these near you
It means i just have to buy a handful of each at a time and its less packaging to recycle.:T I know its a touch more per 100g(3p on mr s price) but it saves buying a big bag of each .
Plus i can try things cheaply without waste if we dislike it. HTH
