Havign drawn out £10k once (car purchase) I can assure you it's not as simple as turning up in a bank to collect it! You have to phone your bank and ask them to authorise it and either book the money to be collected in that branch or if you're lucky and you're close to a large post office they usually have more cash in branch than 99% of banks. To them having £10k ready next day was no problem - my bank? Not a chance!
Still they insist on checking ID and you have to enter your PIN in the machine thingy as per normal so they'd have to have your card and PIN...

If they have managed to withdraw it without these then your bank should correct it ASAP... Personally I would however contact the police straight away and report it as it IS theft and possibly fraud too...

v concerned a any bank would give out so much (and in cash, not chq?), without veryfying ID, or getting prior notice.. once sorted, bets change a/c no's, or even banks!
it's a bank not a building society - they give out large sums of cash on a daily basis!

They still require notice for large withdrawals - my bank (Citibank) requires notice for anything over £10k.

I'm with Natwest, and the branch staff once told me that withdrawals up to £5,000 can be authorised by Chip&Pin without additional ID

I don't know if there is a similar policy for Barclays? Could the Fraudster have taken three lots of £5k out, or was it all in one transaction?

The banks I have worked in couldn't even handle that sort of request as the stocks of money were kept purposefully low. Anyone needing more than around £5k cash would have to book the money in advance, maybe only the same day if we knew it was after we had a security delivery beforehand.

We would also need real ID, so no birth certs etc, we would want a passport or any other official document that would double as an ID card.

Since ID would almost certainly have been taken a fullr ecord will be held by the bank which should enable them to sort this out ASAP. Personally I would have hassled and pushed until someone dealt with me by phone, and if not I would be at my branch first thing this morning with a thermos of tea and a sandwich and I wouldn't move until they assisted me in starting a full fraud claim.

It was probably a Barclay's employee that withdrew it, maybe the Manager.

Their suggestion though of moving money from your Savings Account to cover the overdraft though just about sums them up. The FIRST thing they should be doing is placing an immiediate STOP on the account and collecting the CCTV tapes from the branch.

I honestly would not trust a bank with my money. And it's pretty awful that I am saying that. It's not just your bank who are the potential problem, but also ANYONE (or any organisation) that has the most basic of your account details. Do you think I trust British Gas, BT, Sky, Tesco, Asda etc. etc.? Of course I don't! While THEY don't set out to cause problems, most of them which THEY create are down to incompetence.

OP. First stop is the Manager where your account is held. You also NEED to get stops put on ALL of your accounts. You will *eventually* get this money back, and worst case it's going to involve taking Barclay's to Court. It's not your fault that their procedures are so lax, "oh yes, £16,000 please, thanks ever so."

When the fraud department can't even get it right, there's not alot of hope is there...

Christ Alive!! That's crazy!! When I start a bank you'll need 2-forms of ID, to telephone first, and we'll even give you an envelope too.

If Barclays involved the OP has my deepest sympathy. THEY ARE USELESS.

Sorry must try and keep my emotions under control but I can only speak from experience.

You have my sympathy, with this. The advice above is really good, get down to your branch and make yourself a bit of a nuisance, no aggressive but that you want something done about it there and then.

Absolutely crazy!! So the banks will only let you withdraw £250 from the cash machine using your card and pin but you can walk inside and withdraw £5000 using your card and pin and not have to prove who you are!!
  • BEN, the bank(to clarify this--NatWest) use CHip and PIN identification for in branch withdrawals. For the amount the OP wanted the card/cheque book would be required PLUS Passport/Driving Licence. Additional questions may be asked and there is someone else who will check the paperwork. Mrposhman--that is how natwest works and does not affect the amount that can be drawn out through the ATM.
I have no idea how Barclays work but I would say how would they know the money was there? How did the fraudster know your account details? Have you had any ID or bank details stolen recently?
I would change your account as well because the account has been compromised, something I have suggested to you on another forum.
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

blimey....just hand that amount out over the counter...without ANY cheques it would appear....

Mind you...I wonder how many of us would have that amount available for instant withdrawal...better still....how many people ( read thieves) would know we had that amount available for instant withdrawal....you can just imagine a thief walking up to the counter and asking to withdraw £5000 from Mr Torby's a/c....only to be told....certainly, you can have a loan...but we would prefer it if you clear your overdraft first lol...

    thank you for the replies

    Just a quick update,

I have been to my local branch this morning and things are much clearer, the Branch manager told me that Newcastle branch in question where the funds were apparently taken from is the financial branch and not a regular walk-in branch, also that it’s more than likely to be an Admin error there.

She also contacted the Newcastle regular Branch regards the transaction and they were unaware of it after going through there computers.

It seems the fraud dept have given me completely wrong information which led me to be at my wits end, so rather than having my £ stolen by a walk-in fraudster, it seems to be due to the incompetence of there staff.

I feel much happier now as hopefully there should be no problems getting my £ returned.

    I will keep you updated.

    Cheers
