I had exactly this with Barclays about a year ago. £3,000 taken from my account.
First of all I blamed my hubby!!
Inoticed it late ish on a FRiday evening and was beside myself with worry. To cut a very long story short, it turns out that someone went into my local branch of Barclays & requested to transfer money from one of his accounts into another of his accounts and the cashier took the account number and ID etc. but did not check the sort code and just assumed it was the same as the branch one they were in. So the poor man didn't get the money into his current account as requested but someone else got MY money into their account.
And the best thing...Barclays told me they could not give me the money back until the third party had paid it back to them!!! Can you believe the cheek of them- their staff mess up but they will not pay back monies until recovered.
I did eventually get the money but it was very stressful
TPA xMFW - We've only gone and blooming done it!May 2013:j0

You have my sympathy, with this. The advice above is really good, get down to your branch and make yourself a bit of a nuisance, no aggressive but that you want something done about it there and then.
Absolutely crazy!! So the banks will only let you withdraw £250 from the cash machine using your card and pin but you can walk inside and withdraw £5000 using your card and pin and not have to prove who you are!!
the atm limit is due to the fact that there is only so much money the ATM can physically stock
seeing as the PIN is only known by yourself, I don't see what the problem is
my colleague, a 17 yr old trainee, was this week called a w*****r by a customer because he had the cheek to ask ID from this person who wanted to cash a cheque for £1500 with no ID & was not known to the branch
as cashiers we are damned if we do & damned if we don't0

i think UK bank (anti money laundering) laws require additional ID checks, for transfers of large amounts -
not sure if also applies to cash w/drawals but it should!Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0

A mistake where there is financial loss should involve compensation because there would be no cost involved if the process was carried out correctly. I don't have to contact the bank if there is no problem or no mistake made on my account, so if I have incurred costs then the bank should repair me back to where I was if it had not happened. That involves the cost of my calls(which I can of course show the bank as well as worry and inconvenience--which is difficult to quantify).0

A serious mistake where there is no financial loss should involve compensation, after all, the Banks take rather a lot of money from me if I make a mistake.0
