We have a real problem with our relatively new slippery paths and deck due to algae growing. I have been reading through the various posts and I think I will use the stiff brush method rather than buying a power washer but am not clear which is the most effective time of year to do it. I would welcome any ideas on which…

In my garden today.
I was getting out of bed this morning and glanced in the garden. There on my lawn, no more than 12ft away from the house, was a sparrowhawk on the grass, devouring something. My wife and I stood (almost naked) watching this spectacle. I quickly grabbed my camerphone and started taking photo’s, but the angle looking down…

Capillary Matting
Last year, I brought 3 metres of capillary matting which I laid on plastic in the greenhouse and then drapped the ends into large trugs of water. I stood my tomato pots on there and, voila, I didn't need someone to come and water twice a day whilst I was on holiday. It worked a treat. However, when I came to clear up at…

Lunar Planting For Higher Yields
All this talk of seed potatoes has reminded me of our lunar planting experiment last year. We planted Desiree main crop. The first few rows were non-lunar planted and the remainder were planted three and four weeks later in line with the lunar cycle. All were planted on the same area in well prepared soil through black…
