Propagating Cordylines
Been doing a bit of tidying up in the sunshine today and have finally chopped last summer's flower spike off my red Cordyline. I was about to throw it in the compost when it dawned on me that there were two perfectly healthy-looking leaf shoots on the flower spike and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how…

Help identifying plant
I am planning my garden and have seen a plant that I like in a near by garden, but am not sure what it is called. It was about 3-4ft tall, and had green leaves that were almost the same shape as oak leaves, but narrower and thinner. It had flowers that were about 3cm across. The centre was about 1cm across and had deep…

Aster seeds
I had some aster seeds that had a best before date of I think about August last year. I thought I would try and see if I could get them to germinate. I planted them about 2 weeks ago but they don't seem to be doing anything. Looking on the internet it says they should germinate within about 10 days. At the moment I have…

Where do I start
We have a ground floor ex-council flat which comes with huge garden. OH and I have never stayed in a house with a garden so absolutely no idea!!! Climbing "evergreens" for trellis and pargola
Does anyone have suggestions for plants that would keep their foliage all year, that I could use as a) a screen to hide neighbours houses, using trellis attached to top of a larch lap fence and b) as a sunshade across top of a pergola? I already have the trellis and pergola, but the plants I have (vines and things), all…

First Time Gardener!
I moved to a garden flat last summer and am determined to do some gardening this year... Unfortunately my garden is all slabbed though so I'm a little bit stuck where to start. I want to start off small as I don't have much money, I'd like to grow my own veg (well some of it at least). I quite fancy potatoes, carrots,…

How to move a shed?
Hi In the garden for the house i bought a while ago there is a 7 x 5 shed which is about 3 foot away from a corner of the garden, Id like to move it to make better use of the space. How easy (or indeed possible!!) is it to move it. It seems fairly sturdy with bolts through rather than nails. Is it better to dismantle the…

No Idea Where to Start!
After a lifetime of never having to do any gardening we've just moved into a house with a potentially lovely outside space. My problem (apart from my glaring lack of any gardening knowledge whatsoever) that there are so many things I'd like to do that I don't know what needs doing first. Perhaps you lovely, knowledgeable…

Recording what you grow?
Am very excited that the growing season is starting again and intend this year to really plan and then record what I grow in an organised manner. I've gone through diaries, charts, scruffy bits of paper and my memory (the latter being totally useless!) How do you record what you grow, what works best? Maybe I'm just not…

Lilac bush
I've had another go at the lilac in my garden again, chopping the branches is fine, but the roots are another matter. Last year we did it and it was back breaking work. Does anyone know anything that will kill the roots and make them easier to dig out?
