bird box question

when is the best time to put bird boxes up? i brought a couple in the asda clearance early last summer and havent got round to putting them up yet i just wondered when the best time to put them out is.
the fence at the bottom of the garden faces north(ish) is this the best place to put them we also have a south facing side fance but cant see that from the house just wondered if people found they were more popular facing different ways?

thank you

I think now is the time to put them up as birds will be looking for nesting sites over the next month or so. Which reminds me, I must go and get a couple of boxes for my garden this year.

Put bird boxes up anytime as even in winter they use them for roosting and protection from the weather - overnight :)

It's ideal to place nest boxes as high as possible - away from potential predetors (cats ...etc).

Ours is on the outside wall facing east about 30 foot above ground level and at the side of the upstairs window.

Be careful facing them south otherwise in summer you could have southern fried wild birds ;)

If you have something growing over the fence putting the bird box hidden inside slightly would be OK but, please be aware of the above :)

    Good luck :)

    That's very true Oliver :)

The blue tits in our garden are also already getting frisky (flapping wing tips ...etc).

We've had them nesting every year (usually 2 broods a year) for the past 8 - 10 years- we could do with 2 nest boxes up at opposite sides of the house really :)
